I have two rules in that regard.
Rule #1: Don’t go to Mexico. Instead visit some nice place in the USA.
Rule #2: if you’re thinking about going to Mexico anyway, go back and read Rule #1 again.

The cartels used to have an agreement not to invade the gringo tourist areas but it seems that is no longer being honored. Now, Americans can easily get caught up in the violence and not even leave their hotel.
I went to Mexico City on a business trip. The host company met us at the van with guards armed with M16s and escorted us inside.

We quit going to Mexico many years ago. If I get the...wish I was in Mexico feeling, we have parts of town that are just like Mexico...and just as dangerous. lol
