TOKYO — The Latest on the Tokyo Olympics, which are taking place under heavy restrictions after a year’s delay because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The very first match of the Olympic beach volleyball tournament has been canceled because a Czech player tested positive for COVID-19.

Markéta Sluková tested positive earlier this week, knocking her and partner Barbora Hermannova out of the Tokyo Games.

The Czechs were supposed to be playing a team from the host country that would have been making its Olympic debut. Instead, the Japanese pair of Megumi Murakami and Miki Ishii earned the victory by default.

Sluková is one of at least three members of the Czech team who have tested positive since their arrival in Japan, including men’s beach volleyball player Ondřej Perušič.

The team has said it’s investigating if the outbreak of COVID-19 is linked to its charter flight to Tokyo.

I didn’t know they had beaches in the Czech Republic.

Not Guilty

It the deflated ball symbolic of their Olympic hopes?

I know it won't happen, but I say let them compete regardless if they're positive or not.

Many, many athletes turned in the performance of a lifetime while sick.

Tom Dempsey was crazy hungover when he kicked the 63-yard field goal. Michael Jordan was puking (it was food poisoning) when he helped the Bulls win Game 5 in 1997. Kurt Schilling was bleeding on the mound when he beat the Yankees. You never know.

Dock Ellis pitched a no-hitter on LSD.

Seriously — a no hitter on LSD. That is quite impressive. I did not know that.

That may be the greatest athletic achievement of all time.

I am just trying to put it together how he held it together with a hallucinogen on board that stimulates serotonin. I guess he had a good trip — otherwise I can only imagine what the hallucinations must have been like.

Out of curiosity (and I love your knowledge of sports) — how was this discovered — did he out himself? Drug testing?

Its a hell of a story either way.

I knew about MJ puking through game five — tons of athletes have played unbelievably when physically compromised, but this is an absolute curiosity to me how someone can make it through nine innings with his mind altered. Wow.

“I was zeroed in on the (catcher’s) glove, but I didn’t hit the glove too much. I remember hitting a couple of batters and the bases were loaded two or three times. The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn’t. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn’t hit hard and never reached me.” - Dock Ellis in Lysergic World (1993)

Doc also threw about 150 pitches and hit one batter.

I've scoured the interweb for footage of that game but to no avail. I'd love to see it.

Comer a long way from that in 1993 to the revelation of the Cleveland Guardians today — I think I would like it better if the pitchers were stoned instead of woke.

I wonder if afterwards he told the guys about it. “Yeah - so there was this funky image right where the batter’s box would be. And every time I threw the ball there was, like a trail or something showing where the ball went - it was SO easy dude!”

Years later the TV technology caught up with his trip.

So one of the players tested +. Does that player not want to play? They are all healthy athletes so low chance of a serious or fatal issue. Do the other players care or have a problem? If not, then why cancel?

This Olympics is a ridiculous fiasco. I just watched the march of the athletes and it was absurd. Japan let almost none of them in. It was about as exciting as watching an hour of Animal Planet. Will there be any action at the watering hole? Who knows, tune in next time . . .

Japan will regret how bad they are screwing this up.

Dr. Thomas E Levy is a board-certified cardiologist who got a law degree and passed the bar exam just for fun, and after that has become probably the world’s leading authority on the therapeutic use of vitamin C. So when he prefers nebulized peroxide to vitamin C as a treatment for the Wuhan virus, I take it seriously. According to Dr. Levy it is possible for a person to harm themselves with peroxide, but not with the 3% peroxide that is commonly sold for home use.

The phony FR "doctor" gas_bag disagrees with you. I myself will use his "opinion" as toilet paper.

Yea, well, that may be but lose two friends to Covid in a seeming blink of an eye and it becomes serious.

The new strain seems to be very quick if someone is going to die from it.

That’s a stupid comparison. Ebola is not an airborne virus, and is restricted to a few localized hotspots in Africa.
