Former President Donald Trump’s top political advisers have been holding quiet talks over the last several months with the primary challengers looking to take down his most prominent Republican nemesis: Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney.
During phone calls and Zoom chats, the Trump advisers have pressed the candidates on their fundraising capabilities, their policy positions and the overall strength of their campaign organizations. The goal: to determine whether they have what it takes to unseat Cheney, the influential daughter of a former vice president, who served as the No. 3 House Republican until colleagues ousted her in the spring.
The talks will escalate next week, when Trump meets with two challengers at his Bedminster, N.J., golf club: state Rep. Chuck Gray and attorney Darin Smith. Trump’s son, Don, Jr., who earlier this year visited Wyoming to speak out against Cheney for supporting his father’s impeachment, is expected to be present at the meetings.
Trump is expected to sit down with other candidates before deciding whom to endorse, though advisers say that Gray and Smith have emerged as the two clear frontrunners. To prevent Cheney from winning renomination with just a plurality of the vote, they also say, Trump needs to back the strongest candidate and then elbow out others in the crowded field.
The behind-the-scenes talks underscore the high stakes confronting Trump, who has made unseating Cheney a priority since she blamed him for inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and voted to impeach him. The outcome of the contest — and Trump’s ability to shape it — will be a key measure of Trump’s post-presidential dominance over the Republican Party.

A dog catcher will be just fine.
I can understand why Trump takes this Cheney race personally, but we need to be repeating this across the country.
There are 145 that voted for her to lead them away from MAGA in February.
It’s like an episode of The Apprentice, where they go through the last interview. He should make them run an event while having his kids observe both of them, before he makes the final decision.
It’s going to be a tough task to get Cheney out. She has the full financial support of the GOPe and their big donors. Without tens of millions of dollars flowing in, and lots of Wyoming’s most influential people lending support, Cheney wins.
Gov Gordon and Senators Lummis and Barrasso need to get off the fence and pull out the long knives. Hands off or neutral isn’t going to work. Unfortunately, they fear her. All three of them have to know that Cheney surviving means she will be going for one of their jobs in the future.
This is he first time I can remember that Trump took time to actually think about supporting someone. Most of the time its just a rubber stamp approval with little thought.
“It’s going to be a tough task to get Cheney out.”
Yes. Hence this strawman article from Politico.
While I would love to see her booted out of politics, I would be fine watching her twist in the wind as Pelosi’s token Republican as the majority of the Party side with we MAGA nationalists as she champions internationalism while feeding the military industrial complex.
You do know that Cheney was gunning for Mike Enzi’s seat back in 2016 when she realized there was no way she was going to succeed.
She’s actually a carpetbagger from Virginia. She has NO CHANCE in hell to ever become a senator OR governor of Wyoming. No way.
Congress is as far as she will ever get. I predict all the millions spent on reelection will be as successful as Jeb Bush spending 100 million dollars for a single presidential elector.
Lizard Cheney is TOXIC. She is out and she knows it!
The majority of GOP House members, 145, voted for her to lead them away from MAGA in February.
Her House seat is a state-wide seat that she has easily won 3 times now. Last year, she received 68.5% of the state-wide vote, despite her never-Trump positions. If she wins in 2022, she will be setting her sights higher in 2024 or 2026.
Kill her off next year and I think she's done for. If she survives, I wouldn't dismiss her so quickly.
As if the Trump loving Politico would know

Rumor has it that a drunken oilfield roughneck (I was that once) from Casper, Wyoming whom has not announced his candidacy as he does not remember doing such due to great consumption of alcohol is a 2 to 1 over Liz. When he is elected I hope he remembers he is elected and makes it to Washington to be sworn in.
In a recent moment of sobriety prior to going into the C85 Pump Room he stated his total campaign logic. He said, “I am not Liz.” Some hours later under the influence of much alcohol he said, “I still aint Liz.”
He will win.
