Tropical Storm Nepartak forms east of Japan, could impact Tokyo Olympics

Tropical Storm Nepartak in the Philippine Sea could put some events at risk of being delayed again...

AccuWeather forecasters say the system is expected to remain the equivalent of a tropical storm by the time it makes landfall along the eastern coast of Japan (Tuesday)...

Water sports could potentially become very dangerous if any tropical event brings a rough surf to the coast, which could arrive a day or two before the actual storm and remain along the coast for up to two days after the storm has passed.

I checked this out, it’s a rather minor tropical system at its peak and the track is considerably to the east of Tokyo, the JMA shows a landfall about 100 miles northeast of Tokyo at only a tropical storm intensity in 3-4 days, and the GFS model doesn’t show that landfall but has the storm circling around offshore instead. Probably the impact on Tokyo would be moderate northeast to north winds in the 30-40 mph range and some moderate rainfalls, disruptive to some events possibly, no big catastrophe however.

The more newsworthy tropical event is the other typhoon now approaching China (In-fa) looking like it might bring heavy rains to already flood-ravaged central China. That may be the bigger news maker of the two.
