July 23 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Indians will rebrand as the Cleveland Guardians in 2022, the team announced Friday on social media.
The franchise said last summer that it would start conversations with local community members and Native American groups about a potential name change.
In June, the Indians announced they formed a list of nearly 1,100 potential replacement nicknames and that they were in the process of making a selection.
Friday's announcement featured several new logos, which accompanied the new name. Actor Tom Hanks narrated a video to announce the changes. The Black Keys, a band from Akron, Ohio, supplied music for the announcement.
"We remember those moments as we move forward with change," Hanks said. "You see, there has always been Cleveland, the best part of our name. Now it's time to unite as one family, one community, to build the next era for this team, this city.
"To keep watch and guard what makes this game the greatest, to come together and welcome all who want to join us."
Cleveland's MLB franchise started in 1901 as the Cleveland Blues. The team became the Cleveland Bronchos in 1902 and was known as the Cleveland Naps from 1903 through 1914. They took the Indians nickname in 1915.

It took the team 106 years to wake up to the travesty of their team name.
Been there done that!!!
ff
Probably worried it’d sound to much like “Injuns”.
In old movies about India, you might hear the country’s name pronounced ‘Indja’, even though it was always spelled ‘India’. As people became literate they pronounced the second i in India as an i rather than the older j sound.
Right?!
It wasn't a difficult task for them. :-/
It’s why Indians don’t often cross breed fear of getting the habit.
So what happens if you display a Cleveland Indians banner at a Cleveland “Guardians” game ?
Perfect. The Rats won’t see the irony.
Looking forward to life without sports.
Wokism destroyed it and it’ll never make a comeback.
What the f*** is a “Guardian”? is this the Onion? Or the Bee?
That was my reaction, too. Our indigenous people who were forcefully displaced onto Reservations, and where many remain, were forced by a “guardian” government agency (BIA) that is hated by them to this very day. I would think that Guardians would be insulting and inappropriate.
This seems like a joke.
My guess, ballpark security will confiscate it, or escort you out of the ballpark.
I liked the Cleveland Spiders, but I heard that focus groups showed that women hated that name.
I grew up following sports. Giving up that history is difficult. I'm barely following MLB these days, and I do mean barely. But I am trying to decide on a PC baseball simulator so I can model players mostly from years past, much like we did as kids with Strat-O-Matic and APBA. Action! PC and Diamond Mind are at the top of that list.
“Guardians”—stupid and meaningless!!!!
Just like biden and harris!!!!
PHOOEY!!!!
I have MANY native American Indians in my ancestry... Cherokee... We LOVE the team names Warriors, Chiefs, Chieftains, Indians.... yadda yadda...
My first thought exactly! Guardians of the Universe! LOL
Me too. I used to be a huge baseball fan, but haven’t watched a game in years. Still like football, though. High school, college, or pros.
