Sweden isn't in the news much these days. There's a reason for that.
More than 100,000 people flooded streets in France over the weekend and multiple COVID vaccination centers were vandalized as opposition grew to the government’s most recent pandemic strategy. In President Emmanuel Macron’s latest incarnation of lockdowns, government officials have decreed that unvaccinated individuals will no longer be allowed to enter cafes, restaurants, theaters, public transportation and more.
Needless to say, people were not happy.
France’s approach is unique, but it’s just one of many countries around the world imposing new restrictions as fears grow over a new variant of COVID-19. Australia’s recent restrictions have placed half the country under strict lockdown—even though a record 82,000 tests had identified just 111 new coronavirus cases—while restaurants in Portugal are struggling to survive amid newly imposed restrictions.
One country not making much news is Sweden.
Sweden, of course, was maligned in 2020 for foregoing a strict lockdown. The Guardian called its approach “a catastrophe” in the making, while CBS News said Sweden had become “an example of how not to handle COVID-19.”
Despite these criticisms, Sweden’s laissez-faire approach to the pandemic continues today. In contrast to its European neighbors, Sweden is welcoming tourists. Businesses and schools are open with almost no restrictions. And as far as masks are concerned, not only is there no mandate in place, Swedish health officials are not even recommending them.
What are the results of Sweden’s much-derided laissez-faire policy? Data show the 7-day rolling average for COVID deaths yesterday was zero (see below). As in nada. And it’s been at zero for about a week now.
While many nations are gearing up for more lockdowns, daily deaths in Sweden are still at 0.

Even a year ago, it was clear the hyperbolic claims about “the Swedish catastrophe” were false; just ask Elon Musk (also see: here, here, and here). But a year later the evidence is overwhelming that Sweden got the pandemic mostly right. Sweden’s overall mortality rate in 2020 was lower than most of Europe and its economy suffered far less. Meanwhile, today Sweden is freer and healthier than virtually any other country in Europe.
As much of the world remains gripped in fear and nations devise new restrictions to curtail basic freedoms, Sweden remains a vital and shining reminder that there is a better way.
Yeah, but they’re all gonna die from the Delta Variant or the Russian Variant or the Brazilian Variant. They’re gonna be sorry they didn’t mask up and hunker down. Plus they haven’t defeated the flu like we did. What more proof do we need that the whole damn scamdemic was a global reset hoax?
Is everyone vaccinated there?
shhhh. whatever you do, don’t mention Sweden.
No lockdowns. No masks.
Zero deaths for days.
Be more like Sweden.
Sweden is a mostly homogenous country of Swedish people all adapted to their climate with the right pigment to get vitamin d into their system.
Here where diversity is the key some people do not get enough vitamin d through their skin and are likely the same ones who do not take a supplement.
Sweden being homogenous is why socialism works pretty well. All of them have the same values. In a diverse country where some have no work ethic socialism does not work.
I don’t think they really need the jab since they reached herd immunity long ago. I just searched it and it looks like 37% fully vaccinated.
Sweden has had 14k dead in a population of 10 million.
Norway + Denmark combined are 10 million as well with a similar combined population density and ethnicity. Their combined number of dead is 3000.
Norway+Denmark had a lockdown, Sweden did not.
The economic hit was the same to both countries.
Yet Sweden had nearly 5 times more deaths.
Oh and Norway and Denmark have had 0 covid deaths for some time now
Well, well, well ping.
The population of Norway is less dense.
In deaths per 1M people Sweden is 38th. In comparison:
28. Portugal
27. France
25. Spain
21. USA
20. UK
16. Italy
Norway had 3 deaths yesterday.
You’d prefer lockdowns and masks.
Sweden.....just a bunch of stupid white blonde honkeys over there. White Trash. Pay no attention. Probably racists too.
Coronavirus: Sweden's new COVID lockdown law takes effect
Sweden not ready to lift COVID restrictions, but PM says end in sight
“Sweden being homogenous is why socialism works pretty well. All of them have the same values. In a diverse country where some have no work ethic socialism does not work.”
I am guessing you have not been to Sweden lately.

The ground radioactive reindeer patties are really good, especially with a dash of hot chernobyl sauce

Really? Have you checked where Sweden is located? Yes, nice long Summers, but dark long winters.
What sort of bias colors your rose colored glasses?
Never had a lockdown. Read your own links.
But they did name their law authorizing very conservative restrictions on large gatherings a ‘lockdown law’ to placate their EU (and FReeper) critics.
I wish I’d had it as good here.
Let's compare
. | Sweden | Norway-Denmark |
Population | 10.23 million | 11 million |
Area | 450,295 sq km | 413,455 sq km |
Population density | 25/sq km | 27/sq km |
Total number of Covid deaths | 14,615 | 799+2,542 = 3,341 |
Covid deaths per million people | 1,438 | 583 |
The comparison of Sweden to Norway+Denmark makes more sense as they are similar in ethnicity, in area, in density (when combined N+d).
Both suffered the same economic downturn percentage but Sweden had 3 times the number of deaths/million as Norway+Denmark
yet Sweden had 3 times more deaths/million than N+D despite the economic downturn being the same
The difference? N+D had lockdowns and vaccinations
Sweden isn’t socialist.
It moved in that direction for a while in the 1950s, but later changed its mind and became a Social Democracy instead. In Social Democracy you don’t rely on public ownership of the means of production (farms, factories, mines—classic Socialism). Instead, you have capitalism and private ownership (for the most part), but some of the profits go to improving the population’s quality of life.
They have a free market economy and a welfare state yet Sweden still has a rrank of 10 in “ease of doing business” - the USA’s rank is 6
“A” for effort. Sorry, it’s in statistical noise territory. The main point is that Sweden maintained sanity and is now living normally.
Go ahead, believe the fear porn, wear masks forever, lock up, never go out, take endless shots, deprive those not vaccinated of their rights, fear the “delta” variant...blah blah.
There’s ZERO evidence these policies work at all. FACT - there’s nobody dropping dead in the street because hospitals are over capacity. FACT - we know it mainly hurts old people. FACT - there are higher than normal adverse reactions to these shots. FACT - it doesn’t affect kids.
Put it all together, if you’re old and worried take the shot. If you’re a little younger - chances are you’ll be fine but take it if you want. Let the rest of us live normally and achieve herd immunity. When the politicians are now saying those over TWO YEARS OLD should get the shot, I have a problem. Now they’re rolling out the passports in France. This is NOT an emergency, this is an EXCUSE to control.
How anyone can believe lockdowns and masks are the right policy is astonishing.
