Marvelous that you missed hitting one of them. They are beautiful animals but can be exceedingly deadly. I was very lucky with the one I hit. Dang thing nearly made it through the windshield and into the passenger compartment. Luckily God kept the windshield from caving completely into the passenger area. I shutter when I think of a full grown buck inside the passenger compartment Praise God. Though the windshield was destroyed the buck remained outside and rolled over the roof of the vehicle
Interestingly, we rarely see deer on our property, though there was a doe and her three fawns that were regulars when we first moved here. Meanwhile, my daughter moved to Crestwood (Eastern edge of the Louisville area), and though it is much more populous, they see deer pretty much every day and they are very friendly. I believe that “neighborhood deer” have learned that they have little to fear. Someone needs to fix that. ;)
Sounds like an author that has never eaten much venison.
Yeah, that windshield thing. I think my FR-S is designed to allow the deer to use the hood as a launching ramp into the windshield. The last thing I want is antlers in my face at 60 mph. Heck, even 30 mph.
We live in Huntsville Al, the second largest city in Alabama. We’re in an established suburb about a mile and half to the woods. We’re seeing many more deer here in the neighborhood. Even in broad daylight.
Seven pointers walking around Mt. Moriah cemetery in NJ, looking annoyed when you happen by.
This liberal idea sounds reasonable but I’m sure they’d screw it up somehow in implementation.
Been hunting deer for over 50 years..
The problem is we now have “environmentalists” managing the dnr..
The rules are so restrictive that it becomes next to impossible to get one... and those in charge have never been in the woods, let alone hunted..
The same for fishing..
This leads to fewer people hunting and fishing, and the population explodes..
we have more coyote feeding on dead carcasses from the winter starvation, more disease from the dead and dying deer, and the answer for the “environmentalists” is to restrict hunting further..
Morons all
Wild caught venison would be a great source of protein for the homeless.
“Studies have shown that deer-vehicle collisions fall by 22% when cougars are around, and by 24% when wolves are introduced.”
And THIS is what the dunderheads in government will do. Introduce predators into more populated areas.
Essentially that's the issue. The article takes the position that there are too many deer, a problem to be solved. Most state DNRs would take the position that we have just the right number, thanks to their management.
Not to mention they think our yard, and it’s many plantings, is their personal smorgasbord
And they'll contend it has no impact on game animals.
Interesting that hunters can't sell venison, but can donate it to food banks in many states. Too risky to sell in the grocery store but OK for low income people.
The problem is worst in the states that have restricted hunting due to pressure from animal rights nuts and other cowardly theetie-weeties who want everything they don’t like banned. They can sleep in the beds they made.
Yep, that is the problem, PETA and Vegans want to cull off all humans and give it all to the Deer.
No, they wouldn't.
I hunt, you can not give this meat to the food banks. They refuse to accept it, saying that the people do not want it.
So if I over harvest for our own needs I give them to the local butcher who will charge only for his services in dressing the meat and it will be used locally.
I moved from California to Texas last summer, through Arizona and New Mexico. While driving on Hwy 29 from Junction, TX to Georgetown, TX, a deer jumped from a left embankment to the road in front of my 16’ Penske moving van so close, I never got a chance to take my foot off the gas. Just as quickly, he jumped to the other side, and I continued like nothing happened. If I move back, I’m going south to San Antonio, and staying on the 10 Fwy.
A few days ago, I was in a rural area and stopped for a nice 6 point buck crossing the road. Oncoming guy didn’t stop, just slowed, and I think lightly hit one of the 3-4 more that were behind the 6-point. Didn’t knock the deer down, didn’t appear to damage the car, but I’m pretty sure he tapped one.
The lesson: Just because you’ve seen one, don’t expect you’ve seen them all, stay cautious, keep looking.
