I went to Cuba in 1999 before Obama made it legal. Some friends and I discovered a travel agent in FL who knew Cuban officials and could get us a visa along with a flight on Cubana from the Bahamas to Havana and a very good hotel in Old Havana. Cubans we got to know all wanted to come to America. Lovely people. Old Havana was beautiful, but the rest of the city and island were unbelievably devastated. . Food at the hotel was fine, but the people had to line up for bread hrown off a truck. Couldn’t go to a coffee shop because coffee shops were capitalistic.
On the flight home we flew over the Florida Straits and I looked out window wondering who was trying to escape that night. It was poor little Elian Gonzalez.
I would not object to Cubans being allowed into the US. They are bright and well-educated, and would probably vote Republican.
