Officer Ronald Kennedy attended a scene on Lenox Avenue and 125th Street in Harlem, where a man had been stabbed in the chest. Kennedy immediately asked someone nearby to get a bag of potato chips and then some tape, and fashioned a covering for the wound ahead of paramedics’ arrival.
The clip posted by Harrison included a note at the end saying a doctor who treated the victim had said Kennedy’s actions saved the man’s life.

A sucking chest wound.
It really was all that and a bag of chips!
Ya, easy to treat if you know what to do.
“A tension pneumothorax, on the other hand, can be fatal. Here, air enters the chest outside the lung but does not escape. As more air accumulates inside the chest, but outside of the actual lung, it creates increased pressure within the thorax which interferes with both heart and uninjured lung function.”

I always preferred a bag of Junior Mints or Jujy Fruit. But I guess potato chips work too.
Good job, officer!
That’s awesome
Used cigarette packs in Nam for sucking chest wounds. Put it on the bullet hole and bandage it down... got to have the cellophane wrapper on the pack. Lots of guys carried a pack or two who didn’t smoke.
I remember sucking chest wounds from my army first aid training more than 40 years ago.
Sucking chest wounds are a drag man.
This man was very lucky. Mildly suprised that there was a cop in the area to render assistance. Also this particular cop understood the concept of a field dressing. He most likely was a veteran who spent some time deployed. Most astonishing he was allowed to render the assistance and not harassed by the local onlookers. Doubt this happens very often these days on urban American streets.
I liked the way he got the onlookers involved in helping, too.
Now I go away happy from this thread.

Not unusual for Chiraq paramedics to receive incoming fire!
There to keep your ass alive and your “friends” are shooting at them.
An unhealthy environment.
I am guessing this officer has had some combat experience before becoming a police officer?
The good old sucking chest wound ,blah
What a great story.
Thanks for sharing it.
God bless our good-faith policemen out there.
That was excellent and quick thinking on behalf of that Police Officer.Sealing a sucking chest wound with a plastic bag.
I commend him for saving the life of that crime victim.
