Union Pacific is temporarily suspending eastbound service from West Coast port terminals to its Global IV intermodal facility in Chicago to help ease “significant congestion” at inland terminals, especially Chicago, and at the ports. The suspension is aimed at helping ocean carriers reduce backlogs. Wait, what? Stopping eastbound service from West Coast terminals is supposed to ease congestion with ocean carriers?
Seems to me that containers piling up at West Coast ports would mean that additional ships would be unable to offload, making the ocean carriers even more congested.

I work in supply chain. The intermodal terminal in Chicago is a chronic fustercluck from time to time. I avoid this by paying for slightly more expensive ocean lines who use the Panama Canal and unload on the EAST coast.
You would think that an alternative intermodal terminal would be built in, say, Memphis, Kansas City or St. Louis to compete with Chicago. But, so far, it has never gotten past the talk stages.

More trains would seem to be the answer.

Doesn’t make sense, the same number of ships coming in but fewer trains to move the containers. I wonder if their is some other reason they don’t want to mention.

First we lost Guam when it tipped over from too much weight...
Now we’ll probably lose California...
Hard to see the downside...

ok, i figured it out: Global III is a GIANT intermodal terminal located in Rochelle, IL (slightly west of Chicago near the junction of I-88 & I-39) that UP shut down two years ago because of lack of usage ...
the article was written by a moron, because it should have indicated that UP was SWITCHING west port freight FROM Global IV (in Joliet, IL - part of chicago metro area) TO the newly RE-opened Global III terminal west of Chicago ...
