“We have offered our sincerest apologies to these patients and their families.”
An Ohio hospital transplanted a kidney into the wrong patient on July 2.
An investigation is underway at University Hospitals in Cleveland following the incident.
Two people were placed on administrative leave while the hospital investigates how the mixup occurred.
An investigation at an Ohio hospital is underway after a kidney was transplanted into the wrong patient on July 2.
Fortunately, the patient who received the kidney was compatible with the organ and should not face any of the ordinary side effects stemming from the kidney itself. The patient who was due to receive the kidney prior to the indiscretion is now waiting again for another kidney.
University Hospitals in Cleveland apologized on Monday for the mistake and announced two people were placed on administrative leave while the hospital investigates how the mixup occurred.
“We have offered our sincerest apologies to these patients and their families,” hospital spokesperson George Stamatis told The Associated Press. “We recognize they entrusted us with their care. The situation is entirely inconsistent with our commitment to helping patients return to health and live life to the fullest.”
The United Network for Organ Sharing, which oversees the transplant system in the United States, has been notified.
Cleveland.com reported that University Hospitals in Cleveland had already performed 95 kidney transplants this year.

Maybe the Hospitals in Ohio should be licensed.
Just a thought.

When I go to MD Anderson for follow-up appointments or scans, I get asked for my full name and DOB at least five times even though I get a wrist band when I check in for my appointment with that same information. MD Anderson is extremely careful. One of the large number reasons it is the top cancer center in the world.

Maybe the Hospitals in Ohio should be licensed.
The Cleveland Clinic is world-renowned and known as one of the best cardiac hospitals in the world. It’s where the rich Canadians go when they want to skip the line for their socialized healthcare.
University Hospitals was great for a time, but they’ve had a pretty bad run lately. We used to use them for our family but switched to Cleveland Clinic.
Not sure if UH is getting hurt by being a “teaching hospital”. Seems like time you go, your doc is followed by 3-5 students.
UH has admittedly stumbled a lot lately. But there’s no city I’d rather be for healthcare. Cleveland is phenomenal in that regard. Cleveland Clinic normally battles with the Mayo as the best in the world.

Huuuuuuuuge lawsuit.
I think they’re already battling a huge one for screwing up a refrigeration unit and killing a bunch of embryos.

Being-a match is real unusual .
Matches usually takes years.
CMS. may shut down their program .
They have done only 95 this year sounds like a small transplant program.

Being-a match is real unusualFrom what I heard, the recipient was also a match. They just gave the organ to the wrong person in line on the waitlist.
They have done only 95 this year sounds like a small transplant program. They do 190 per year. Which doesn’t make the top 10, but it’s a significant number.
US News has them ranked #25 in the country in nephrology. Cleveland Clinic across the street is ranked #5.
They messed up big time. But I don’t see them losing their program any time soon.

Being a accidental match is highly unusual .
I used to consult on transplants program payments .
Matching is a what holds up many on the list .
CMS will come down hard on this error.

This story is falling apart fast - mistake my eyeballs - the medical staff is suspected of taking a big payoff to shove the “wrong” patient ahead of the schedule patient. Both needed a kidney transplant - no coinidence that both were a perfect match.

It does seem a little too coincidental.

What is so sad about this is the person who anticipated the life saving organ must be devastated. I can’t imagine the pain they must feel.
