My bet is your company is getting something from either your state and/or Fedzilla to keep the boot on your necks. More likely (from my experience), they’re getting a pile of conflicting advice from lawyers, and trying to figure out how to minimize their legal exposure.

Agreed--that is why there is no point in "standing on principle" with this stuff.
Telling the truth is the best short term strategy.
Calmly and quietly looking for another job (while employed) is the best long term strategy.

If that were the case, the muzzles would NEVER come off. And they are coming off.
My bet is money and/or some other quid pro quos (regulatory relief, for example) are being offered.
