Because in Louisiana, there are no party primaries. Whomever makes the top-two slots for a given office (state or federal) goes to a “general” runoff. By that reckoning, you can claim any party label you wish. Prior to the 1991 race, the GHW Bush White House had persuaded squishy pro-abort semi-liberal Democrat Gov. Buddy Roemer to switch to the GOP. This was done to head off freshman State Rep. David Duke from ostensibly becoming the de facto leading Republican to run for Governor.
However, Roemer was not very popular with state voters or the Republican base. He ended up placing 3rd in the all-party primary with 27% to Duke’s 32% (Edwards got 34%). By all accounts, the GOP would’ve won the general runoff, since 64% had voted for GOP candidates, but because it was David Duke going to the runoff, it forced the entire GOP establishment from the White House on down to endorse the Democrat Edwards, who won 61-39%.
That was the movie “Blaze” with Paul Newman playing the (then) ex-Gov. Earl Kemp Long and his final run for Congress before his death. Louisiana has had numerous colorful Governors since the 19th century.
I suspect Edwards was more “conservative” than most of our modern-day RINOs.
Edwards is famous for running against David Duke - “Vote for the Crook - It’s Important.”
That was an actual GOP sticker.
And David Duke now is a big fan of Ilhan Omar.
He was a damn crook.
He was a crook but that's pretty much a requirement to get elected governor in Louisiana. Colorful guy that could always be counted on for entertainment.
Louisiana always was and remains a political cesspool and this guy was the turd that floated to the top and stayed there the longest.
Why shouldn’t he be? They both hate Jews. Though I thought Duke supposed to be against coloreds, too,
Duke hates Jews even more than blacks.
That was the election David Duke tan as a Republican I think.
The other bumper sticker was “Vote for the lizard not the wizard”.
“Wasn’t he the one that said I’m fine unless they catch me with a live boy or a dead girl?”
Governor Huey P Long of Louisiana said that in the 1930s. Didn’t matter, he was assassinated by the deep state since he was making plans to run against Roosevelt.
Earl Long
Sounds like a male porn star
He also said, ‘The only thing I have in common with David Duke is we’re both wizards under the sheets.’
He was a character
Indeed
Huey Long was a straight-up Fascist.
I remember Earl Long holding a press conference in his underwear.
One of the country’s all-time great shysters. If there were a shyster HOF he’d be a first ballot inductee.
“Huey Long was a straight-up Fascist.”
No, not even close. But he did make some people squeal, especially the elite in New Orleans.
