I remember DDT when I was a kid. We didn't have garbage disposals back then. We wrapped food scraps in newspaper and they went into an aluminum can to await pickup by the garbage man.

Maggots would soon arrive and we used the DDT. There was no other "garbage" option back then.

Off topic, but just bury your food scraps in your mulch pile. No animal fats or meats though. Same with your newspapers and junk mail. I have a large blender in the garage from a paper mill lab and I re-pulp all my waste paper. Best compost ever!
