This is extremely impressive, especially seeing it from the street.

“I went on the USS NEW JERSEY when it was in Bremerton Washington..”

In the 70s the Missouri was over there too. It used to be over by the highway and you could go on at any hour.

I saw the New Jersey doing fire support with her 16” guns when I was in ‘Nam. She was standing offshore about 3 miles and when she fired the water rippled from her guns all the way to shore.

Why? They weren’t much of a factor in WWII, much less now.

Wife and I walked the deck of the Missouri, just out of dray dock with a fresh coat of paint some years ago.

The BB had been updated with missile fireing capacity and a computer console was in the command post, along side controls from the 1940s.

She was magnificent.

Nice post--thanks!

I toured the Mighty Mo in Long Beach with my family when I was seven, made a crayon drawing for my grandmother because she was in the hospital and couldn't accompany us, and later built the Revell model:

I was attached to a Saudi unit as an adviser at al Khafji. when we moved forward in the ground war we found at least 3 Iraqi bunkers destroyed by 16" naval rounds that did not explode.

We were 10kM from Iraqi troops and the battleship and B52 bombardments reminded me of those old vibrating football games. My cot would move several feet in the tent. One of the Saudi officers complained about not being able to sleep during the bombardment. I said imagine how the Iraqis felt.

And they can hit target 26 miles away!!!
