A police officer in New York state is on administrative leave after a video showed him punching a woman in the face after she tried to bite him while under arrest in Walmart.
Multiple cameras captured the violent incident inside the East Syracuse Walmart on July 4.
The Dewitt Police Department said 22-year-old Tajenik Byrd pepper-sprayed several people, including children, when a fight broke out in the store. It's unclear what led to the altercation.
During the confrontation, a woman in a black shirt, identified as 26-year-old Tyreana Edmonds, began arguing with store employees and allegedly hit them in the face.
When Dewitt police officers Rory Spain and Corey Buyck arrived at the scene, a man quickly directed them to the fight. Body camera video shows Spain handcuffing Edmonds while Buyck tries to take Byrd into custody.
Police said Byrd resisted arrest, knocking Buyck's body camera to the ground. The camera goes dark, but Walmart's surveillance video captured the rest of the struggle. Byrd falls to the ground as Buyck tries again to handcuff her and places his body weight on her hips and legs.
Meanwhile, a cellphone video from a bystander shows Edmonds trying to bite officer Spain's arm before he punches her in the face.
Both women were eventually taken into custody. Edmonds is facing multiple charges, including assault and resisting arrest. Byrd was charged with child endangerment, assault, and resisting arrest.
Spain was the only officer placed on leave and will stay off the force until the investigation is complete.

If she had AIDS the bite could be fatal. The officer couldn’t know if she was HIV positive or not. His actions were justified.
And i am certain he reatrained himself from using more force than necessary.
If someone attacks me I am going to make sure they aren’t faking or are able to keep fighting.
True
And its not just AIDS
Just regular human mouth bacteria is dangerous and can cause serious infections in a bite, and we aren’t even getting into a bite that takes a chunk out of you.
Cops abuse their position from time to time, but in this case he showed remarkable restraint by just punching her rather than wacking her with a baton. If Some feral animal tried to bite me I’d be tempted to shoot it.
Syracuse. Never mind!
Notice how the TV station smears the police officer for making a “violent arrest” of his attacker instead of saying “officer defends himself from violent attacker”.
Good shot.
She deserved it.
Fully had that one coming.
Considering how dirty human bites can be, she deserved to lose those teeth over it. He showed remarkable restraint, IMO.
totally, yes
I am trying to remember... Not something ALWAYS easy to do anymore. This reminds me of one particular incident where I was bitten by humans(I am being generous here). I know it to be more than that. You just don’t keep count. Your “Superiors”(I REALLY despise that term in that context) scrub such an incident as though it NEVER occurred! NO ONE! NOT one! was EVER charged with assaulting me. Those in charge are in the business of selling a farce where such things just don’t happen. They sell an imaginary image. The TRUTH makes them look bad. The LAST thing that the political class, that includes ANY and EVERY scumbag LE or military above the rank of SGT, wants you to know is the “truth”. They ALL lie to advance themselves. They are ALL Narcissists!
They were, until we let the feral animals write the rules.
Equity...
