Leading up to the summer months when Chicago historically sees its highest levels of violence, Mayor Lori Lightfoot vowed to take an “all hands on deck” approach to stopping the city’s shootings.
But even as the city canceled days off for Chicago cops and forced them to work 12 hour days, two of the mayor’s top aides took time off leading up to the Fourth of July holiday, where at least 108 people were shot, 17 fatally.
Some aldermen criticized the absences.
Lightfoot chief of staff Sybil Madison was out of the office on Thursday and Friday, Madison told city workers in an email. Madison, who became chief of staff just last month after serving as the mayor’s deputy for education and human services, said Lightfoot’s new chief operating officer, Paul Goodrich, would be in charge while she’s out.
Goodrich joined the mayor’s office last month after a career largely spent in the private sector.
Lightfoot’s deputy mayor for public safety, John O’Malley, was also out for most of last week, sources told the Tribune.
The absences came as city officials prepared for the Fourth of July holiday, which is often among the city’s bloodiest. It also came as Lightfoot and police Superintendent David Brown complained that aldermen called Brown to a special City Council meeting to discuss violence, saying it took away valuable time from preparing for the weekend.
In response to questions about the absences, Lightfoot’s press office released a statement saying “working in the mayor’s office is a 24/7, 365 job, and members of the mayor’s senior staff are constantly connected.”(snip)

Unexpected...
If only they had been on duty, all those lives would have been saved.
But at least Lightfoot takes her personal hygiene very seriously. We found that out when she got her hair styled (yeah…let that sink in) in the middle of the quarantine.
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
In Chi-town, sometimes…every once in a while…it isn’t.
Some animals are more equal than others.
Don’t care. My give-a-damn is busted. Until Chicago residents wake-up, then I’ll continue shrugging my shoulders.
They were smart. They didn’t want to get killed. They are too important people. Let the peasants take the bullets.
This is just another example of how a Marxist, black lesbian in too many Democrat ruled/ruined cities, is totally incompetent to do the job. Check out Houston, LA/SF and other such cities for the records of their Democrat female mayors and chiefs of police.
(There are a few honorable, competent exceptions but they are not the rule, sadly).
There is something in their mindset that makes them largely incapable of being “the best” at their job. Perhaps being “racially woke, sexually antagonistic” has something to do with it.
I don’t give a damn about a person’s race, gender situation, family structure, etc. when it comes to law enforcement. I want competence, common sense, no politics, and as much sympathy for the victim as the left gives to the perps/killers/rapists/looters/arsonists.
(My son was a federal police officer. All he wanted with his group was competence, which is why his group was composed of mainly combat veterans. Unit and individual discipline, plus mission-focus, was what made them so professional and successful).
I vote simple stupidity.
Thinking that a couple of high-level bureaucrats being on-call in their offices during a holiday weekend will have the slightest effect on the behavior of Southside ghetto rats is the height of stupidity.
