A bump for the Prepper Thread. Same story here: they were laughing, now they’re asking for advice.

Just purchased a 30 ft long walk in with last 8 ft freezer. 8 ft wide with 8’ 6” ceilings.

That gives flexibility.

I’ve been a low key prepper since 1960. Always figured I had better be prepared for anything.

So far I have not needed to use any of what I learned but did have a decent “stockpile”.
When out of a job my stash of food came in handy.
In an ice storm a few years back we were without electricity for several days. We did just fine as I listened to the one radio station still broadcasting and realized how many people were crying for “HELP”.
Some people were advertising their only bottle of lamp oil for anyone who needed it at a high price.

Very cool... Could freeze dry quantity in that. Anyone ever want to know how to freeze dry in a normal freezer just holler.

Funny, I mentioned hackers in the OP and now there's a new hacking/ransomware attack article. https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3975056/posts

Well, I can freezer-burn food in a normal freezer, no problem. That’s practically like freeze drying.

That is exactly what it is. And it can be accelerated by slicing thin on racks. Putting in a small fan to circulate the air around. And putting a new bag of cat litter in the bottom with holes punched in it to absorb the moisture. We use a huge stand up freezer so that we can do a whole bunch at a time then vacuum pack it. Only takes about 2-3 weeks and much cheaper than buying freeze dried products, they are crazy out of sight with those prices.

Might want to consider a generator. We have a Generac that is capable of running all the power in the house and comes on automatically when electrical power from the grid is lost. We have it fueled by propane, and have a large enough tank to keep us with electricity for at least a month or two at full power (a lot longer if we ration by zones). They are expensive systems (our costs $12,000, but we survived 15 below temperatures and didn’t lose all of the freezer food in the process.

Just figured something out. If you’re browsing say, the “Curing” files and decide you want all of them, there’s a button at the top that says, ‘Download all files’ that will pack them up into a zip file for you.

I just installed this cloud app, Nextcloud and I’ve played with it before didn’t know that trick.

Also, when you’re viewing a file/pdf, there’s a close X button for the file viewer at the top right but it fades away after a few seconds. Just move your mouse pointer off of the file viewer or up to the top right corner and it will appear again.

How does the flavor hold up? Freezer-burned meat is pretty nasty.

I dry a fair bit of food with a hot-air dehydrator. Would freeze drying be effective to remove more water from already dehydrated food? I don’t have an extra freezer to devote to freeze drying, though.
