White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Hunter Biden had a 'right to pursue an artistic career,' as she tried on Friday to justify the administration's role in brokering arrangements for the sale of his paintings.
It followed revelations that the White House helped set up a deal for buyers' identities to remain hidden to ensure they did not win presidential favors.
This White House has frequently promised full transparency in pursuit of the highest ethical standards. Now that means secrecy.(snip)
The plan will allow Hunter Biden to forge ahead with his new life as an artist after a career change from high-paid consultant on international deals.(snip)
Psaki confirmed that the White House had been involved.
'Of course he has the right to pursue an artistic career just like any child of a president has the right to pursue a career, but all interactions regarding the selling of art and the setting of prices will be handled by a professional gallerist, adhering to the highest industry standards, and any offer out of the normal course would be rejected out of hand,' she said.
'And the gallerist will not share information about buyers or prospective buyers, including their identities with Hunter Biden or the administration, which provides quite a level of protection and transparency.'(snip)
'The whole thing is a really bad idea,' ethics expert Richard Painter told the Washington Post, which revealed new details of the arrangement.
'So instead of disclosing who is paying outrageous sums for Hunter Biden’s artwork so that we could monitor whether the purchasers are gaining access to government, the WH tried to make sure we will never know who they are. That’s very disappointing,' tweeted ethics expert Walter Shaub.

The 51-year-old's art dealer Georges Berges, who was jailed in California in the 90s for assault and making terroristic threats, told Artnet that he has priced Biden's artworks between $75,000 and $500,000
“...a deal for buyers’ identities to remain hidden to ensure they did not win presidential favors.”
Huh?
So keeping things in the dark, will ensure things are on the up-and-up.
Got it.
I wouldn’t expect anything other from lunatic liberals.
I can draw the transparent cube!
The entire family is scum.
Oh, the buyers already have their influence
Now that the Biden’s corruption has been outed - they just need to figure out another way to launder the payments.
I keep thinking this must be the Babylon Bee.
I hear his masterpiece, “Ukraine Money Reaches Dad” is very well received. An abstract called “China Used My Skills” is both mystifying and disturbing.
You would think Hunter has pissed off one drug dealer or female acquaintance by now to warrant a life-altering event.
“Oh, the buyers already have their influence. Now that the Biden’s corruption has been outed - they just need to figure out another way to launder the payments.”
Yup.
What a corrupt family.
Geez, things get more bizarre by the day.
What’s Biden doing? Finger painting?
P-Sack isn’t a very god liar…
I’m a pretty good photographer who has won a number of regional competitions.
Why the secrecy, Hunter?
Were my photos represented by an agent asking $500k, I’d be crowing from the tallest tree!
“He is an artist.”
Just like Hillary was a whiz at cattle futures!
“In your face, America! What are you going to do about it?”
A con-artist??
He is a Con Artist.
More important question: Why isn’t Hunter in jail?
Anybody who is in the art industry KNOWS that artists who are starting their careers are lucky to get $750 for a piece of original artwork.
That the WH doesn’t acknowledge this simple fact is beyond belief.
And both are military vets too. Hillary, came under fire as we recall
Is this the Babylon Bee? Yes, he has the right to an art career, but he has no talent. Who is forking over the cash for this “art”, and why?
