Leah Davis Lokan, 65, of Chico, California, was on a long-distance bicycling trip and had stopped in the western Montana town of Ovando when she was killed early Tuesday, said Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials as they provided more details about the attack.
Lokan was killed on the bear’s second visit to the site where she and two fellow bicyclists were camping near the post office, officials said.
The approximately 400-pound (181 kilogram) grizzly first awakened the campers about 3 a.m., officials said. They took food out of their tents, secured it and went back to sleep, they said.

They didn't realize they were the food the bear had a hankering for.
agree.... but food in your tent in bear country is a big no-no... especially in Grizzly country.
It's one thing to drive a car and leave trash behind. But, a continued presence of scent for hundreds of miles via biking, stopping and resting, year over year will create new issues.
It's now a game trail.
this ^^
In Grizzly Country, you are food!
They didn’t remove the food until AFTER the bears first visit. Stupid.
To bad they weren’t armed.
Yep...and once they smell food somewhere they’ll keep coming back until they’re deterred!
Yes, they drew a lot of attention, didn’t they?
I was just looking at a more recent story which notes they were camping near the Post Office, which is functionally on Main Street.
Somewhere they were ill-served in terms of food, smells, quiet, not to mention a 500 lb night guest.
Good lord, they chased the bear away once, then took their food out of the tent and went back to sleep.
Word is a couple/three businesses have the visit on security cams...
I guess I haven’t talked to you in a while but the contractor called a few weeks ago and asked if we had cut someone’s hair near the well-head. Long hair. Orange hair, and lots of it.
That was before just we had our cameras and alarms turned on.
Really kind of awful in that you have to assume (I haven’t spoken to anyone up there yet) that somebody on hand must have suggested where to camp.
Bad deal.
Are you in the territory? We should head up there one day soon.
I was reminiscing about a canoe/camping trip to Algonquin in canada late 1970’s. We smuggled a revolver in with us. Tied all of the cooking stuff in a bag hung by a tree far way from our campsite. There was a bear attack right before our trip. It was a pain but i doubt the revolver we had would have stopped a bear. maybe the swarms of mosquitos. Later while hunting for turkey in bear woods. i bought a Taurus .44 magnum for protection.
One of my best friends is an only child, and I will only say one negative thing about her, which is that she is the pickiest eater I know. Otherwise, she is very capable and generous.
There’s a canadian camper I follow on YouTube.
When he camps in an area with bears he drives miles away to eat.
He never eats where he camps.
Meals on wheels.

I can’t bear to read these sad stories.
How could anyone go back to sleep after the 1st bear visit?
Why they didn’t leave after that, I haven’t a clue.
Is that the deceased?
Why does it say California mugshots?
“It’s what little brothers do”
You are a good brother.
