I don’t doubt you or your friends, but Chinese track family relationships far more than we do. One of the first things they do when meeting another Chinese is establish what if any family ties they share.

This happens a lot. Chinese schools are rigorous, many Chinese think its too rigorous. Chinese parents complain that it only produces rote learners and good test-takers. They will do whatever it takes, pay huge amounts of money, to get their kids into USA high schools. Many Chinese families also want to have a foot outside of China as insurance.

America is such a funny place. We have groups who have education and America's wealth and opportunity handed to them on a silver platter, only to become more hateful and resentful. And then on the other extreme, we have minorities who will do everything they can to get education and out-compete others.
