It happens quite often. I have followed a lot of vehicles with tags from New York and other far away places. They all eventually find their way out.
I’m probably about 30 miles away, and I don’t know my way around there at all.
I went to Athens about 10 years ago to take the Ham Radio Technician’s license exam. Otherwise, I’m rarely in that area - when I go north, I take 27 all the way past I-40 and cut over to 75 near Clinton, TN. Avoiding Knoxville and it’s city traffic.
