Pet owners seek to delay demolition of Florida condo tower
NY Post ^ | July 4 | Yaron Steinbuch

Pet owners who lived in what still stands of Florida’s partly collapsed condo tower want the structure’s planned demolition delayed until any animals who might still be alive there are rescued.

The search for human and animal survivors in the building’s rubble in Surfside next to Miami Beach was suspended Saturday as officials prepare to demolish the remaining part of the 12-story structure ahead of Tropical Storm Elsa.

But an online petition has been started to halt the demolition until “all animals are safe” and already garnered almost 4,300 signatures, the Miami Herald reported.

Julie Miró, a Miami resident who signed the petition, said she also sent emails to Gov. Ron DeSantis, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and local emergency officials urging them to try to save any animals stuck inside the teetering building before it is knocked down.

Leave all the doors and windows open while setting the demo charges.

I understand that there’s a hurricane coming. But why the rush to demolish the remaining structure?

Maybe flying debris would be a serious threat. But maybe the powers that be want to destroy evidence.

I love animals as much as anyone and if I thought my pet was still alive and inside the remaining part of the structure, scared, alone, probably in the last stages of starvation by now, I would be heartbroken.

But seriously. The remaining part of the structure has been deemed highly unstable and a hazard to the recovery workers in addition to the possibly of TS force winds or even strong thunderstorms. It needs to come down so the brave people working 24/7 to find the human remains and give their families closure can continue that work without any additional loss of life.

Say a pray for Fido or Fluffy and then go out an adopt a shelter pet.

What a wonderful counter-argument. Or maybe it isn’t.

As a side note, I just don’t trust anything the government says or does these days. If that makes me a bit odd, so be it.

So, who exactly are “the powers that be” and what are they “destroying evidence” of and why? I look forward to hearing more unhinged conspiracy theories because there is such a shortage of them.

Yea. I know there really aren’t enough of them. : )

I especially like the idea that a building that had documented structural issues would be taken down presumably by controlled demolition specialists without anyone ever noticing them for some nefarious reason TBD.

Regarding that building collapse, there have been reports that the developers gave campaign donations to local politicians as the building was being constructed. If that is so, those politicians would have a vested interest in not exposing any design or construction flaws.

And this is something I have some knowledge of. One branch of my family is involved in construction. The pressure for political “donations” is unbelievable. And if you don’t donate, all sorts of inspectors will show up at your job site. And you can bet they will find many things “out of code”.

But it you do donate, the inspectors will often just stop by for a moment, then sign you off. It’s an ugly mess. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

Maybe flying debris would be a serious threat.

Flying debris are absolutely a serious threat in a hurricane, especially from collapsed structures. And the remaining tower may very well topple in wind, damaging structures in other blocks. It is already an imminent danger to the responders combing through the wreckage below.

No need for any nefarious conspiracy now. Just a strong inclination to get out of the way of falling objects.

That was an outstanding demolition job they have on tape. The building came straight down with minimal-to-no damage to the surrounding buildings or area. I’m not a demolitions person, but I know professional work when I see it.

There are many videos on YouTube for Controlled Demolition’s projects. It is amazing what they do and also the history of the company. Good people. They work internationally but are still family owned and run and good people, from what I understand a very religious Christian family who treats their employees very well.

The construction company that built the condo went out of business some 20 years ago and original developer is long dead as would any or most of the gov’t officials or inspectors long retired or dead as well.

I’m not buying your argument that without anyone noticing, crews came in to do a controlled demolition. A controlled demolition would for one thing not have gone unnoticed and would cost as much or if not more than any lawsuit over overlooked code violations stemming from 1980.

Permit me to add a personal story to my post #11. Perhaps it will give you a better idea of where I’m coming from.

Years ago my uncle wanted to buy a large piece of property. He wanted to build houses on it. But there were two problems. The area was not zoned residential. And a coal mine fire had occurred under the property.

My uncle paid for a test, and the test suggested that coal mine fire was out. So my uncle went before the town council, presented the test, and asked that the property be rezoned as residential. Sure, the town council said. But that will cost you $10,000 per council member. (They didn’t care about the coal mine fire, one way or the other.)

My uncle refused. But suppose he agreed, and paid the money. And suppose that later a coal mine fire ruined those houses. Would the town council want to see the evidence come out , or would they prefer that it be suppressed?

That’s all I’m saying here. Don’t ignore the possibility of a cover-up.

Yes, I know that this building was put up quite a long time ago. But please don’t overlook the possibility of an institutional cover-up. County officials have a motivation to protect not just themselves, but their offices.

I am not saying that this is the case here, or even that it’s likely to be the case. But by golly, I will no longer accept everything the government says or does at face value. I will always wonder, at least a little bit.

I don’t understand why they haven’t been using robot dogs to try to retreive some things. Oh, wait, I guess people locked their doors before leaving. Wonder if the evacuees were allowed take their pets with them, or were they told it was only temporary, and they left their pets? This is awful.

4,100 were fake signups from Anonymous and some sick Reddit subgroup and the rest “might be real.”
