The pilots of the Transair Flight 810 had reported engine trouble and were attempting to return to Honolulu when they were forced to land the Boeing 737 cargo aircraft in the water, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.
U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Commander Karin Evelyn said in an email that they received a report around 1:40 a.m. of a downed inter-island transport plane. About an hour later, rescuers in a Coast Guard helicopter spotted the debris field and two people in the water, Evelyn said.
One person was hoisted into the helicopter and taken to Queens Medical Center in good condition, Evelyn said. The Honolulu Fire Department rescued the other person who was also in good condition, she said.

Water landing a 737 possibly full of cargo and the two aboard survived?
Major hat tip to the pilots!

There’s a show called “Air Disasters” and in two of the episodes the pilots responded to the loss of an engine by shutting down the working one.
Not saying that’s what happened here.

Could be even a little more skeptical and ask what was the total insured value of the plane, cargo and the likelihood that well trained pilots could could safely extricate themselves from such a situation. That would be more like a Hawaii 5-0 script than a real life near tragedy.

Bird strikes on or just after take off can do it.

A 737 cargo carrier has only two people on board?
Let's see:
- Pilot
- Co-pilot
- shouldn't there be some kind of loadmaster?

How do both engines fail on a 737? Bad fuel?

Off the top of my head, from most likely to least:
Fuel starvation due to error, on the ground, in flight, or both
Cargo flight? Don’t rule out insurance fraud…
Bad fuel
Mechanical failure, most likely due to negligence by a small company

And in the dark! That ups the difficulty factor tremendously.
