Experts suggest vulnerability of south Florida to rising seas could lead to destabilization of further buildings
The shocking collapse of a 12-storey building in the Miami area last week has raised questions as to the role played by the climate crisis, and whether the severe vulnerability of south Florida to the rising seas may lead to the destabilization of further buildings in the future.
The exact cause of the disaster that befell the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside on Thursday has yet to be fully determined, although a 2018 engineering report on the structure warned of “significant cracks and breaks in the concrete” and that design flaws and deteriorating waterproofing could cause “exponential damage” via the expansion of these cracks.
At the time of the building’s sudden collapse, repairs on its roof were taking place but the restoration of concrete had not started on the 40-year-old condo. A total of 10 people are confirmed dead due to the crumpled building, with 151 people unaccounted for.

Unbelievable. Even I didn’t see this stupidity coming.
My cat got worms - must have been climate change!
It was obviously either climate change or Hunter Duncan’s wife, there is simply no other possible reason!
The worst part isn’t some jacka$$ is saying this, no, the worst part is the thousands of jacka$$es who BELIEVE it!
How can these people be any more stupid…the dozens of other high rises on Collins Ave are in a different climate???
This is dumb. It was clearly caused by systemic racism. Blaming it on the Sun is just more racism.
I want to see how this harms people of color and lgbtqi+ most.
Do the Democrats escaping from Leftist hellhole states know that FL real estate is right in the path of the rising sea?
Miami condo collapse prompts questions over role of climate change
No it doesn’t.
Nice try, though.
Structural Engineers who seem to know what they are talking about tell me that this was a result of poor design (inadequate drainage) magnified by sloppy installation. The result was a maintenance nightmare that would have required constant vigilance and effort. Which was not provided.
Everybody involved wanted to just look the other way.
There were documented signs for years in advance that the building was deteriorating and becoming unsafe. Repairs were going to be very expensive, essentially wiping out the equity of most of the resident-owners. The H.O.A. board members were not capable of dealing with the situation. A number of them perished because of that.
"Reality is the stuff that is still there even when you don't believe in it". (Anonymous Internet Quote)
I heard one researcher say several years ago that the vast increase in population in Florida is draining the underground aquifers that fill the limestone chambers beneath the ground. As a result, the land is sinking because the water below ground that supported everything is being withdrawn. The sea isn’t rising—it is the land that is sinking. Too many people demanding too much water.
Makes perfect sense to me. He had statistics and studies to prove what he was saying and he was an expert on the topic.
When did re-bar begin to be epoxy covered?
CNN pushing this crap Wednesday morning.
No doubt. Still waiting for commie-la to give her assessment.
