DeSantis’ big goal: Don’t enrage Trump (Politico)

TALLAHASSEE — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is on a collision course with the most powerful man in the GOP: Donald Trump.

DeSantis is crisscrossing the country to deliver red-meat speeches. Iowa leaders begged him to visit. He just beat Trump in a key straw poll. And now the popular governor is getting close to overshadowing the former president in the 2024 presidential sweepstakes.

All of that could be dangerous for DeSantis’ political health, as Trump continues to ponder a new bid for the White House and remains capable of kneecapping any Republican he sees as a threat.

“It makes it difficult to openly start campaigning as [Trump] at least contemplates running again,” said Saul Anuzis, former chair of the Republican Party of Michigan, cautioning it’s still “early” in the election cycle. “It keeps activists on the sidelines.”

DeSantis, who has the benefit of claiming he’s just running for reelection, continues to gain accolades for opening up Florida during the coronavirus pandemic sooner than most large states. His frequent appearances on Fox News put him in the national spotlight almost nightly. Last weekend, DeSantis beat Trump 74-71 in the annual Western Conservative Summit’s straw poll in Denver — results that surprised even organizers of the summit. Last year, Trump won the same straw poll with nearly 95 percent support.

DeSantis is Trump. One and the same. Donald merely needs to throw his support behind him and he coasts in.

Don’t believe that is true at all. Nikki Haley or Tim Scott are their choices. DeSantis was the freedom coalitions choice for governor, not the establishment. He crushed the establishment choice. DeSantis is the natural follow up to Trump. He has an iron spine and similar beliefs. He was an excellent conservative congressman and has been an all time great governor. This is the media trying to divide. Let’s not fall for it.

Fake news. DeSantis and Trump are two peas in a pod.

Given that Mr. DeSantis largely agrees with Mr. Trump on policy, the premise of the article is hard to accept. And DeSantis has not stabbed The Donald in the back.

“….they would much rather have him than Trump.”

Not true. They want neither - DeSantis isn’t as much of a threat yet.

“DeSantis is Trump. One and the same. Donald merely needs to throw his support behind him and he coasts in.”

Would be nice if that’s true because I want our next president to be a conservative like either of those individuals.

DeSantis has done good things in Florida, but he is also the establishment’s choice over Trump

Only if they sense that he is the only hope of stopping Trump. The one they REALLY want is Nikki Haley.

he is also the establishment’s choice over Trump.

Nope. Not even close.

The establishment cannot abide DeSantis either. Not only is DeSantis a firm Trump ally — he is a Rush Limbaugh Republican. A true Rush baby. A Limbaugh Institute student. (The GOP establishment despised Rush.)

The GOPe fears DeSantis and fears more a Trump/DeSantis ticket. They will continue to join the Democrats in ongoing sabotage.

DeSantis has been a good ally to Trump, but unlike Trump he hasn’t challenged the GOP elites. Has he ever gone after McConnell? Did he do anything to primary useless RINOs?

DeSantis/Trump or Trump/DeSantis is just fine. Both men seem to sincerely love the People, the Republic, the Constitution and the Free Market.

Blabber on bolsheviks with small b.

he hasn’t challenged the GOP elites.

He has completely remade the state GOP, which was owned by Jeb! types for generations.

He got rid of the corrupt Dem election infrastructure, which was totally protected by the GOPe.

He has fought and defeated the state GOP party machine. He is a governor, and that is the turf on which he successfully battled.

Before that, he was a Congressman, a founding member of the Freedom Caucus.

As governor, DeSantis has accomplished more to defeat the establishment of both parties than any other politician on the political scene today, except for Trump himself.

DeSantis would be wise not to run if Trump decides to 2024.

They fear DeSantis, that’s why the hit pieces.

They obviously fear Trump more because they rigged and election against him and trying to come up with phony charges to prevent him from running again.

But, the RINOs don't seem to fear DeSantis. And, that is a red flag.
