Let’s say we have a Time Machine that can go only back to the 1930s and 1940s. Would you take it?

My parents are both passed. They were born in the 1920’s, Dad served in WW2 and Mom worked at Bell Telephone. She also had 13 kids and became an RN, but that is another story. Both would often tell me of the extremely tough times during the Great Depression. Mom said she remembers as a little girl with nothing to eat, she would sometimes chew the edge of a pencil just to satisfy the need to chew. Dad also experienced the lack of food and till his last day, never let any food go to waste. Found out after his passing from his friend at Dad’s funeral, he told me of the horrific days in Guadalcanal. My dad lost his buddy right before his own eyes, from a grenade blast. My Dad when asked, never ever shared his experience, only saying you don’t need to know.

In America, (not Europe) with all the terrible circumstances and events in the 1930’s and 1940s, they still had something that we no longer have. They had America. They had true family values. There was no social justice hijacking of businesses or the individual. There was no platform to allow or perpetuate the psychosis of one gender to say they are the opposite gender. There was no “Defund the Police”. There was no demonization of our Flag. There was no cancel culture. There was no one party rule. There was no enforcement of a fake vaccine that causes countless deaths and disabilities.

So my question to you, if you could go back to the 1930s or 1940s in exchange with our current times, would you?

Sounds like my dad. He always said anyone who wanted to work could always find a job. Living through the Carter years I’ve gone from sitting in a office talking to the head of surgery at a major teaching hospital to cleaning up trash at a job site at the same hospital, and back to running my own company. But I never stopped working.

The problem is not one of society at large. Consider your own neighborhood and neighbors. Do they seem pretty normal?

The problem is a thin film of ruling elites at the top who are trying to maintain their power thru fear, intimidation, and sowing discord. It is a world were going forward, technological progress is empowering the average person, and the elites can’t stand it, but they can’t stop it.

The 1st revolution was the invention of the printing press. Suddenly books and knowledge were not locked away in dusty libraries accessible to the few. Ideas could spread. The result was the fall of the monarchies of Europe.

The 2nd revolution is the computer and internet age. The average person now has publishing power equal to what was once the domain only of newspapers or Hollywood. The dinosaur media is trying to hang onto its power, but it can’t. They can try and censor views they don’t like, but the design of the networks ultimately prevents centralized control.

We’re witnessing the last gasp and last grasp of the central planners. It’s a terrifying and exciting time, and I wouldn’t want to miss it. We’ve all got ringside seats to the glorious bonfire of the vanities, to quote Wolfe.

I always thought 1880 or so would be a good birth year.

Absolutely.

True American patriots. Greatest music until rock and roll came around. Individual liberty. The biggest limitation on what you could accomplish was how hard you were willing to work and how smart you were, not who you voted for in the last election.

No, but if you could send me 90 years into the future, I’d go for that...

1947. I'd take my family and two computers, each with 16 terabyte drives containing every scrap of human knowledge and computer code I could pack in there (including ancient computer software).

I'd work to convert people to Christianity, and destroy Communism in the US.

And today a bunch of childish, perversion loving, hate filled people who don’t hold a candle to men like our fathers are destroying everything they fought to preserve.

"but I’d take 1955 in a heartbeat."

I'd take any 1950's and early 1960's before the British Invasion and the Hippie movement started.

I would go back and put up with the soup lines and the WPA jobs, secure in the knowledge that the men were men and America was America.

I believe, as far as the universe is concerned, I am nothing. God loves his creatures, so in that I have faith. Changing time, would not change any of the above. People always seem to believe that they would be happier, more successful, or lead more exciting lives in another time. I suspect none of these things are true. Changing time would effect everything and everyone, and I can’t in good conscience do that. It is how it is. Live for GOD, serve the best you can.

I would, but you can never go back. That’s the lesson that needs to be learned. America is never going to go back. We can only go forward.

I love the music of the 1930s and 1940s and have fantasized about playing in one of the great bands of that time, but I wouldn’t go back because of the hardships of the Depression and the War.

My parents lived through those times and maintained a mindset of thrift and “do without” that lasted their entire lives. I inherited much of that tradition and have to occasionally kick myself to spend more and enjoy what I have.

I would not want to go back in time with my current old body.

Most of the medicines I take are recent developments so I would need to be cured from several chronic conditions or take a pharmacy with me!

Just give me my mid-20s year old self and then you’d have a deal!

Maybe so, however, I always felt growing up that I did not fit.

As a teenager in the early 80’s, I preferred musicals to rock concerts and a host of other examples.

No doubt I enjoy the modern conveniences we have, computers, email, apps etc.

However, I would absolutely trade these conveniences to old time American Values.

When you make that decision, remember it would have to be WITHOUT knowledge of the future! As much as I dislike what FDR did to us with the ‘regulatory state’ AND keeping in mind that Hoover did a lot before him, the GREAT DEPRESSION was a true disaster and an unprecedented WORLD CRISIS! If FDR had held to the 2 term tradition, PERHAPS we, as a nation, would have been better off BUT his reelection was an indicator of how desperate times were even 10 years into that hell!

There were so many negatives going on in the 1930s, financial failures that beggared both the rich and middle class with the poor even worse off. Agricultural failures like the Dustbowl and others both natural and manmade! Almost no charitable nor government safety nets because no one could foresee a recovery and thus be brave enough to spare the money. Almost unique in light of past recession/depressions was how there were blips of a recovery that were cruelly followed by another crash!

So, my answer is NO, I have no desire to enter that depths of misery and despair!

No. God put me in this time for his purposes. God’s will be done not mine.
