Indiana DNR recommends removing bird feeders amid mysterious bird deaths statewide
WTHR ^ | 25 June 2921 | WTHR

Earlier this week, Indiana DNR said birds - including cardinals, robins and blue jays - were getting sick or dying across the state, but it was unclear why. Investigators say the birds have shown signs of neurological illness, as well as eye swelling and a crusty discharge

The sick or dead birds have been found in 15 counties across Indiana...

As the department works with the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and the USGS National Wildlife Health Center to determine what is causing the bird deaths, they're asking all Hoosiers to remove feeders from their yards.

That includes hummingbird feeders

What if this spreads to chickens and turkeys?

Maybe it’s the Covid bird flu.

Are squirrels dying too, because you can usually find them in bird feeders.

You just use 1 pound of granulated sugar in a clean 2 liter soda bottle, shake well and refrigerate. Pull the feeder at 2 days max on hot days, or if it looks murky or you notice any black spots on the feeder and clean it well before next use. I'm on my 22nd year using that method with no problems and no dead birds.

Happy Hummers

Could there be something wrong with the most commonly used Bird Feed in that area?
Seeds that were stored well past their Due Dates during the pandemic. Pallets full, that just sat around, unsold for months.

I’m sure the Groundworms, Aphids, and Ladybugs don’t have a problem with it, though.

Always best to boil the water first then add sugar - despite the chlorination there remains some microbes in municipal water that doesn't affect mammals but can make hummingbirds ill.

Not my line of work, but Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is thought to be transferred via saliva, among other vectors.

Grains can get mold that is toxic if they are allowed to get wet.
