Given an obscure, cryptically written poem as a clue and a vague idea of where the chest could be, hundreds of people have already headed to the great outdoors in search of the reward. The activity’s organizers, John Maxim and David Cline, say that their self-funded treasure hunt has already received national attention. Some people are planning on flying in from as far away as Atlanta and Hawaii in search of the prize.

“The whole idea was last year, you know, people had just been locked inside for like a long time so we wanted to do something fun for the community to safely get outside and do something and so we just cooked this whole idea up,” Cline explained.

Until the first person gets mauled by a bear in the wilderness.

100’s are looking for $10,000? If 500 are looking the expected return is $20.

They do not share the prize.

I know they don’t share but the average won amount is quite small. Doesn’t seem worth putting any effort in it.

A good way to control people with nothing to do otherwise. I doubt if anyone quits their job to go looking. Bury a canister with a $100 bill in it and the winner reports the serial # on the bill to collect the rest. That way the organizers can put an end to it. Just watch all the ‘disabled’ people suddenly go into action while still collecting their disability checks.

Looks like some people spend more $ looking than it’s worth.

Which begs the question, what is more valuable, the "treasure", or the bragging rights to be able to say you found it?

I wouldn't quit a job over $10,000, unless it was the new company paying me $10k a year than the last company, BUT, I do tend to get out hiking, gold panning, rock hounding, etc. This would be a fun day trip outing for the family.
