One time a couple of cows that had been raised on 2 acres by some kids for a 4H project kicked their way out of a horse trailer and ran off the freeway. They took refuge in some brush behind a Denny’s restaurant.
I was working that day and the police called us for assistance. By the time we got there one of the cows had given itself up and was back in the trailer. There were literally a dozen police cars there and the swat van as well. The head cop came up to us and said they needed one of our ladders so their “sharp shooter” could get a clear shot at the remaining cow.
Since I grew up tending to livestock from the time I was a small child... I said, “Let me find a bucket to fill with a little gravel and I will get that cow out of the bushes in a couple of minutes.”
The head cop said, “NO! This is a dangerous wild range cow!” While they were setting up with our ladder I asked the lady where the cows came from. She told me that they belonged to the little kids that lived next door and were more like big dogs than a normal beef cow. They had just gotten to big for the 2 acres her neighbors had.
The police shot the cow a dozen times in the side with their AR-15 type rifle before the confused cow finally fell over and died. Then they taped off the entire area with hazard tape and would not let anyone in until after their “investigation” was complete. It was a disgusting waste of good beef.
“...bucket to fill with a little gravel”
OK, we are waiting for the rest of the story.
What would you have done with the gravel in a bucket ?
