To fatten up a cow, you feed them extra food in addition to the grass they graze on in the field. These pressed alfalfa & molasses nuggets rattle in a bucket, so a cow can be fooled by almost anything in a bucket that will rattle like them. A cow will follow someone forever if it thinks it can get more tasty food from a bucket. When we were kids we even fed the cows by hand. Their long raspy tongues trying to get a nugget or any kind of feed out of our hands would make us giggle. Come to think of it, they would lick you just to get the salt from your skin.
