I was waiting to see of anyone would mention this and as of now no one has.
80 years ago today Germany invaded the Soviet Union in a surprise attack.
It started one of the bloodiest and catastrophic episodes of W.W. II.
The scope, scale, casualties , and atrocities almost dwarf anything that happened anywhere else in the ETO.
Without the sacrifices the Russians made on the Eastern Front the invasion of Europe would not have been successful.
Estimated deaths on the Eastern Front are not totally known but an estimated 20 million died
Nazis and Communists - Two rabid dogs fighting over the same bone.
“What’s funny is that if you listen to the Soviet Propaganda before Barbarossa, they defended the Nazis, and said that it was “Capitalists” driving the British to fight against Hitler.
Suddenly after Hitler invades, the Soviets go to the Brits and basically said, “No hard feelings, eh, pal?”
This was also the same attitude the left in the US had, including many in FDR’s government. Once Hitler attacked the USSR, the German socialists became “right wing.”
And then there was Stalin’s treatment of Soviet POWs who returned to the USSR after the war, most went straight to the Gulag.
Yep, the Communists were more isolationist than Lindbergh until June 22.
...indeed
and carving up Poland for their own personal gain, as well.
the russians calling the germans sneaky, and vice versa, is rich irony
And Stalin basically approved of Hitler eliminating the German Communist Party, since he always viewed them as a threat to Moscow’s domination of the World Communist Movement.
yep...Toten Kopf! They wore a patch with a skull!
Don't forget to mention Russia gobbling up the Baltic nations and fighting with the Nazis in Poland.
The movie was OK...Bob Hoskins played Khrushchev...Ed Harris played the German sniper, Major Konig...
The movie came out 20 years ago...
And invading Finland as well, they even bombed Helsinki.
And it did have Rachel Weisz.
Hoskins played Beria in “The Inner Circle”.
Also I highly recommned the movie “Stalin” with Robert Duvall.
If Russia had been neutralized during the war, it would’ve taken much longer for the Allies to win it, but win it we would. Imagine 1000 B-29’s over German targets...P-80 jet fighters roaming the skies... nuking Berlin, Nuremburg, and Munich.
Thomas Kretschmann also played a German officer in THE PIANIST...
Have you seen CROSS OF IRON? It is about Germans fighting on Eastern Front...
LOL, is there a WWII movie he isn't in?
Our Germans were better than their Germans.
Yes, indeed...I remember one scene where she was lying next to Jude Law's character...
They both got too excited with each other...Even though there were other Soviet soldiers around them sleeping...
