It was my understanding that these were joint maneuvers in the Pacific between Russian naval units and Chinese naval units... no mention of Chinese ships here.

All I can say is that the Chinese are not mentioned in the story. Either the reporter ignored their participation or the Chinese disengaged from the Russians in the maneuvers. I know that earlier it was reported that they would jointly be doing naval maneuvers in the Pacific near Hawaii.
