told U.S. National Public Radio that her daughter had last texted her: “In a car with a stranger. I hope I’m not being abducted.” If she had time to text, she shoul have also taken his photo and texted that too. That would change his thinking.

Stranger in a strange land jumps into a stranger’s car. Murder plot writes itself.

What is wrong with being a 34 year old student. Many people go after higher ed after entering work force. My wife is 51 and a student after her Masters.

...and studying ‘law’ there? Sounds more like an ACTIVIST to me.

She chose poorly.

Bio says she was in the Marines prior to this (with one Afghanistan tour). I guess she was enrolled in the Master’s law program in Russia.

Stranger in a strange land jumps into a stranger’s car. Murder plot writes itself. I read that and wondered what idiot would jump into a car, while on foreign land (hint, I wouldn't do here in America) of a stranger? Sometimes people ask to be killed.

Guy thought he could take advantage of her easily, but must have put up a big fight which led to the victim getting stabbed.

“In a car with a stranger. I hope I’m not being abducted.”
Hope is not a strategy.

No offense to the victim, but whatever happened to situational awareness? I thought that was part of training for anyone in the military. Am I wrong?

It sounds like she just decided to move to Russia after visiting and enjoying the lifestyle. Law is a great, highly respected profession in Russia, and you pretty much have to study it there as their system is significantly different from the US/English Common Law.
I spent a year and a half in Russia (2017-2018) and had a hard time making the decision to come back to the USA. The slightly older-fashioned lifestyle and general personal liberty that the average person can have is very attractive, especially if you live outside of a giant city.
I'm actually in Russia right now, for a nice summer vacation (had to skip last year because of CCP virus).
