Cal/OSHA board votes to end face mask requirements in the workplace for vaccinated employees

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Cal/OSHA regulators decided Thursday to allow fully vaccinated workers to take off their masks while at the workplace, conforming with California's general state guidelines that took effect on June 15.

The newly revised guidelines now align with the California Department of Public Health, which ended most mask rules for people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Here are the masking guidelines for workplaces under the new rules:

Vaccinated employees are not required to wear masks while indoors, except for the places where California still requires masks to be worn by all people

Unvaccinated employees must still wear face masks in indoor settings

Face masks are not required for vaccinated and unvaccinated workers while outdoors

Employers will need to document who is vaccinated in their workplaces, but they are not required to retain copies of vaccination cards. Instead, they can allow employees to self-attest to full inoculation.

Cal/OSHA's guidelines require approved face coverings, such as N95 masks, to be given to unvaccinated workers who request them rather than have them physically distanced.

Regulators added that businesses can choose to be more strict when it comes to masking.

Officials said the state was going to make a month's supply of masks available to employees, which some business owners told the board during Thursday's public comment portion of the meeting that was not enough.

Physical distancing requirements will be lifted, except if a work facility has a coronavirus outbreak. The guidelines say that all employees, regardless of vaccination status, will need to wear face masks if their workplaces see a surge in COVID cases.

Vaccinated employees will no longer be required to miss work to quarantine if they come into contact with someone who contracted COVID-19.

The guidelines also lift prohibitions on sharing personal items or work equipment. Instead, regulators say employers should implement more cleaning protocols and evaluate their ventilation systems.

Employers will need to make COVID-19 testing available to unvaccinated employees when they have symptoms.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said earlier this week that he would sign an executive order that will allow the new rules to go into effect immediately, avoiding the usual 10-day administrative law review that would have pushed back the effective date to June 28.

Employees could fill out some paper stating that they are vaccinated...

Businesses, in CA, are still allowed to force all the employees to wear masks...

I have to say that some people love wearing masks...At least in CA...I went to a grocery store today...I and one other gentleman were not wearing masks...Everybody else was wearing a mask...

At what point, will people stop wearing masks? In any case, I will mind my own business...If somebody else wants to wear a mask for next ten years, I do not care...

Your employer might have a right to know your vaxx status, but every other employee in the place?!

If a company muzzles the refuseniks, the company is forcing them to disclose private health info to everyone who sees their muzzled mugs.

So much for the right to privacy.

It has been a mixed bag here in N. California re masks.

Tuesday, my wife and 6 of her bible study ladies met for their weekly session, and none of them wore masks. It was hot and they met in a church hall which is ACed and a good size hall.

There were two other women meeting in the other end of the hall with masks. 4 had met for a quick lunch and didn’t wear their masks. They said 1/3 of the people in the restaurant didn’t wear masks.

Yesterday I got my hair cut without a mask, and the lady who cut my hair didn’t wear one because I didn’t.

Another customer was trying to give me a rough time, and she backed off when the other patrons and hair stylist said that they were vaccinated. So were the other customers.

Next I went to discount grocery store. There no signs saying masks were necessary and nothing to wipe the carts. So I went in without a masks. A manager semi confronted me, and I told him masks were no longer required. Most customers just looked me. I told them that California was back to normal. It was not normal to wear mask. The clerk who checked me out, thanked me.

This morning, my wife had a hair appt in the AM. She and her stylist didn’t have masks on. Masked people outnumbered those without. Nothing was said by anyone about masks.

Today our #2 contractor showed up at 8:30 am to install 5 dusk to dawn outside lights and 3 sensor lights. He had his mask, and I told him no mask. He said thanks. He and I worked outside replacing the old lights with the new ones.

He went to Home Depot to get the sensor lights and did not wear his mask. No one challenged him. He said most of the employees were wearing mask and about 50% of the customers.

Before he finished, I go deliveries from UPS, postal service, and Amazon and no one wore masks. There was basically no close contact.

One of my wife’s friends called and informed her that she and husband had shopped at two grocery stores without mask and more people in the stores didn’t have on masks. They allowed them to bring in grocery bags and the employees put their groceries into the bags they brought in.

Today, I went to an upscale grocery store to buy 90% of our groceries. I went in unmasked.

There was no one at the entrance cleaning carts nor monitoring us.

Inside, about 1/3 of the shoppers had no masks and at least 2 of the various asst. managers did not have a mask on. 3 vendors did not have masks on.

No one said anything to me about where was my mask?

I thanked everyone, who didn’t have a mask on, and most of them responded with a thanks to me.

More women all ages were not wearing a mask than men.

A friend, yesterday, shopped at Whole Foods and Trader Joes and she notice the same things. No one challenged her about not wearing a mask, including the various workers in those two stores. Those 2 stores have been among the worse re no masks, then no shopping there.

The Walmart parking lot was full as we drove by. One of fix our home crew had been in Walmart 2 days before and most of the Hispanic shoppers had on used masks/bandannas. No one had their noses covered by their masks.

Our 100 degree + temps this past week may be waking people up to how much more miserable they are in that heat, sweating and wearing a damn mask.

What is amazing is how the local and state media outlets is not covering this great uncovering.
