Heart/lung machines are also hard on the lungs.

When my Dad was in for his bypass, the Dr. explained it to me and that he was going to get him off the machine faster than usual because of how hard it was on the lungs - Dad had fibrosis of the lungs.

True, but it appears the doctors didn’t go the intubation route and continue to increase the pressure until he expired attempting to keep his O2 levels among the living as was so commonly done back when ventilators were the daily Cuomo dog and pony show.
