The criminal and feral government hates encryption. There are any number of very strong encryption algorithms that could, and should have been used. Personally, I'd like to see an implementation of PGP to share session keys. It would be incredibly easy to set up. The two cellphones could handshake their public keys, then agree on a session key. None of this is rocket science.

Apps that are properly written like Signal get around this.
However keep in mind that if someone gets remote control of your phone then no app can get around that.
Buy a burner phone with cash in the SHTF. have good opsec and use code names.
