To: a fool in paradise

it lies in “flyover county”

I flew into Boise at night from the east. It is pitch black on the ground. Then I hear the aircraft do it’s getting-ready-land things. Flaps coming down, then the wheels, still no lights on the ground. Finally were low enough to see individual cars, but no sense that we’re getting ready to land at a city airport. Even after touching down there were no city lights to speak of.

Flyover country indeed.

One upon a time, nearly all airports were like that — because they were located on the outskirts of a town where there was plenty of [cheap] land. Fly into Denver from the east and you’ll get the same thing — it’s out in the middle of nowhere. (I think the plane taxis all the way to Kansas before it finds a runway to take off from.)
I would hope that most Californians would read your comments and share the sentiment and stay the hell away! :-)
