The biophysical modeling study, published in The Lancet Planetary Health, challenges outdated public health guidance that discourages fan use in temperatures higher than 35 degrees Celsius / 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
Based on human studies carried out at the University of Sydney's Thermal Ergonomics Laboratory, the researchers developed a model to determine the humidity-dependent temperature thresholds at which fans could become detrimental, providing conditions that exacerbate heat stress.
"The effectiveness of a fan depends on temperature and relative humidity and our previous human studies have shown that it is only when the air temperature is very high and humidity is extremely low that fans can be detrimental," said senior author Professor Ollie Jay…
Specifically, they propose that the simplified fan use temperature threshold of 35°C currently recommended by the WHO should be increased to 39°C for young healthy adults, 38°C for healthy adults older than 65 years, and 37°C for older adults taking anticholinergic medication.

They work great until you hit the mid-to-high nineties in monsoon season. Then they don't. They work the least in the time you want it most. The higher humidity (granted nothing like the anything outside the SW) we get in the Albuquerque area during monsoon makes swamps pretty much useless except as air movers.
All the homes in hot weather areas in the 19th century were built to stay naturally cool. Verandahs and cupolas. Now people live in 2 story boxes. No shade trees.
True, although it is true that they have no A/C/ in most buildings in Europe. Remember when all thos people died in a heat wave some years back? I rented 3 houses in German and none of them had A/C.
Not trying to reinforce the WHO on this... But, I think they are right to a point anyway about being a necessity, it is more of a comfort thing that people get used to. I live in Arizona and been in the same house for 27 years now and we have no A/C and never have, Just a swamp cooler. It works great this time of year... It was 113 yesterday and the highest it had been in the house was 79 at 5:30, then the power went out for a little while and I had to leave it on all night for the first time of the year, just to recover. Yesterday was the first day I even used the A/C in our car this year and that was only because I was so hot after the power went out in the house, I know I am crazy, but I like the heat when it is dry here, it is why I stayed here after growing up in Oregon.
All that said, 3 months of discomfort are coming soon... Monsoon season it does not work too good, temp only goes up a few degrees in here (still low 80’s), but with the swamp cooler adding moisture, you would think it must be over 100 in here. My wife has COPD and can’t hardly breath with that much humidity. I installed a window unit in our bedroom for her last summer and going to try to finally install an A/C for next year I think... We are thinking about selling and move out of the city soon anyway and having no A/C will really hurt what we can sell it for... Tough decision now that it will be paid off before we elect a new president.
Yeh Scrooge them. Whats so bad about AC other than higher electricity use? People stay more productive in AC cooled facilities. How about developing clean, efficient nuclear energy and we can use electricity with endless supply. AC one of the most greatest inventions ever.
Their report and recommendations were made from an office at a constant 75deg F.
I have been in Columbus MS when it was 110 and 100%.
It was nearly foggy. Visibility about 100yds.
And yes, it had a festering stench to it.
And humans are dangerous and must be removed from the planet as soon as possible. A/C is just the beginning.
The solution to excessive power demands is to convince the gullible that they don’t need it.
And this is just from France.
Europe is gonna thin out its geezers one way or another...
One of the reasons I put solar panels on my house is so that the gubment can't control at least that much of my power usage.
Great catch!
ERCOT is evil. Asking TX to reduce electric usage when temps are reaching triple digits. They can’t handle a freeze and now they can’t handle normal summer heat. Our power company gave $$$ to a nearby county to be used on a new gazebo and flowers at the park instead of improving the infrastructure.
Maybe, just maybe, we have too many illegals sucking up our electricity.
I like to say that if A/C hadn’t been invented, my state of Florida would have maybe 5% of the population it currently does.

Same with CA.
Our family lived in Pune, India for two years. In the hot, dry weather just prior to the monsoon, it would regularly get to 110F in our apartment even with all the curtains drawn to keep out the sun. During the hottest part of the day we would read by pulling our chairs under the ceiling fan and pouring water on the terrazzo floors underneath us. Then we would sit with our feet in the puddles until all the water evaporated. Now maybe in a scientific sense it wasn’t cooler, but it sure felt like it! :-)
They can do it since many are getting those controlled thermostats that connect to the internet. I do not have that and won’t as long as possible.
I’d be an icecap. Lol. I’m in central Florida. My AC is at 80. However in winter, my heat is also at 79/80.
