A Pekingese named Wasabi won Best in Show at the 145th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Sunday. The reserve slot, or runner-up, was given to Bourbon the whippet. The Westminster Dog Show is the second-oldest continuous sporting event in the United States, after the Kentucky Derby. It has run through world wars, previous pandemics and economic depressions. Last year, amid the pandemic, the event was moved to June.

The competition was held at the Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, New York. It was the first time the competition has taken place outside of New York's Madison Square Garden, where it has been held every year since 1877. It was was relocated this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

KIRK: (shows Chekov the packet of wheat) Mister Chekov, what do you make of this?
CHEKOV: Oh, quadrotriticale. I’ve read about this, but I’ve never seen any before.
KIRK: Does everybody know about this wheat but me?
CHEKOV: Not everyone, Captain. It’s a Russian invention.
KIRK: Ah.

Like Afghan Hounds, Pulis, Komondors, Poodles, Irish Setters, Cockers, etc, that is a “show coat”.

Non-show people generally don’t let the coats grow out like that.

Think of of it as “flashy special effect” to impress the judges.

I cannot imagine giving it a bath.

With my Dobes, I just put warm water in a stew pot, add a bit of apple cider vinegar to it and then soak a towel and wring it out and wipe them down and they’re done.

If I want “flashy”, I mist them with organic coconut oil, rub it in and then “buff them out”.

Both additives are great for their skin and *no* chemicals on them, ever.

EVERYTHING was Russian when Chekov was involved.

Just had a thought that led to a disgusting conclusion.
The Enterprise went where no man had gone before...
Making Captain Kirk the first Interstellar “Swordsman”...
And Sulu the first Interstellar Pillow Biter...
Ugh!

How could that thing ever hope to live in the wild? It would be tangled up in its own hair if it wasn’t groomed.

It’s cute, but completely not practical, unless you believe it’s good for owls.

I was reading quite a bit of Wambaugh in the ‘80s. After “The ZNlack Matble,” I decided to take in a dog show. Let’s just say that the men showing Yorkers and Pekingese were tight up CNN’s alley. (Shouldn’t h Th eh be called Beijingese, now?)

"This dog’s grandfather won the show in 2012. Looks just like him. He comes from regal bloodlines."

My brother Fred was a Delta. That makes me a legacy. They have to take me. It's their law...

Yeah but how does the dog live when the show coat is growing out? Hair net, braids? Strictly indoor, daily mopped rooms?

An insane amount of upkeep.

They have snoods on when they eat, to keep their ears clean, constant grooming.

It sounds like a nightmare, to me.

You don’t remember the formerly little known Portuguese Water Dog winning BOS as soon as Obeyme got one?

Westminster is political.
