Investigators are probing the possibility that 22-year-old Paul Murdaugh — who was facing trial in connection with the death of a young woman — may have been the one marked in the attack, The Island Packet reported.
The University of South Carolina student and Maggie Murdaugh, 52, were found shot to death Monday on their sprawling estate in the center of the state.
It remains unclear if the shootings were related to the 2019 tragedy, the report said. No arrests have been made.
Sources told the newspaper that Murdaugh was shot at least twice with a shotgun, while his mother was killed with an apparent assault rifle.
The family is connected to one of South Carolina's most prestigious law firms.
Alex Murdaugh, the husband and father of the victims, works at Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth and Detrick, which was founded by Randolph Murdaugh in 1910.

Someone didn’t trust the court system and took preemptive action.

“Assault rifle” is specific and that club doesn’t have many members. Wonder if they have a spent bullet.
Sounds like a revenge killing.
I think we will see more and more of this “guaranteed” justice as people are getting sick and tired of the upper crust getting a pass. I can’t believe many members of the DC crowd are still walking around breathing.

The fact that they are surrounded by assault-weapon carrying "security" might have something to do with it.

Possibly. But you should know that the family of the girl he killed in the boating debacle, was a devout Christian family. I live in this costal area and have a friend whose husband is a professional charter boat fisherman. On the night of the boating accident he was on the water and had a very difficult time making it in to port. He said it was as bad a night as he remembered and later could not imagine six of these kids on a 17 foot boat was allowed to leave a party, where adults were, on a boat intoxicated. He said they were doomed.
From reading around about this case it seems this kid, son of a powerful family, was never going to do time. Almost 3 years and his trial date was still outstanding.
Someone decided that they had enough of it IMO.

Yup...3 generations of this family involved with the law in this area.
The Island Packet editors have been gunning for the
Murdaugh boy from a prominent family who was driving the boat involved in the boating accident that killed a pretty young girl.
Two summers ago a black man accidentally killed a young girl who was crossing hwy. 278. The Island Packet, while sympathetic to the girl’s family, was so solicitous towards towards the young man that they with held his name.
Two horrible accidents resulting in death were treated differently by the Island Packet.
Last week there was a deliberate murder of two members of the prominent Murdaugh family, the boy and his Mother. In my humble opinion, the killers may have been goaded to kill by the Island Packet.

That is an interesting take on a crazy case. Really expected to hear something MORE by now. LE says there's no threat to the public.
