This is a music video of Johnny Cash doing a cover of a Nine Inch Nails (NIN) song which was about self-destruction in youth. Johnny did it about the disappointment of an old man who sees his life coming to an end, which his actually was. The video was done 7 months before he died. There is plenty of symbolism which I won't ruin for you, but some is explained in another video The Sad Story Behind Johnny Cash’s Hurt
A sad video, but Cash still had his voice to the end.
Once of his best imho.
Excellent. Thx for posting it.
Seeing June standing there, watching Johnny, is utterly heartbreaking. It’s like she’s saying “Johnny, why are you doing this to yourself?”
“...The video was done 7 months before he died...”
it was done 3 months before June Carter Cash died also...
Nine inch nails has a rendition of Hurt.
Johnny does it better
When Cash sings a song you believe it comes from his heart. I can think of no singer that can instill that belief in the listener as he does.
I believe Trent Reznor has as much as said that.
Johnny Cash‘s version is just excellent. As many people know Nine Inch Nails did the original. Cash’s is much better. Much much better.
As a huge NIN fan, and never a Johnny fan, I think his last CD was brilliant and soulful. I’d take his version of “Hurt” over NIN, all day long.
I love that video. You can hear the pain and regret. I shared it with my daughter, who despite not knowing “older” American music too much, really enjoyed it.
Cash’s video of “Hurt” is one of the few non-classical music pieces to be a part of my college classical music course. I consider it one of the best examples of a music video as art, the video equivalent of the best of Rembrandt in capturing in a moment the life, time, success, and ultimate collapse of a famous 20th century man.
It has also moved me personally twice, once 20 years ago in helping me connect with my father after his death, and once again this year in helping me deal with the death of my wife. It is what great art does.
Thanks for the mail. The video currently has 111 million views. Pretty amazing.
I remember when it was first released. Still hits you in the feels.
I believe the reason why Johnny’s cover was so believable and successful is due to the fact that Cash went through the same battles with drugs as Reznor.
Cash, like Reznor, lived that song.
I remember the first time I heard Cash’s version. I was lying in bed, listening to an Alternative Rock station out of Tuscaloosa and this played.
I jumped straight up in bed. I owned the NIN “ Downward Spiral” CD and “Hurt” was my favorite track. I couldn’t believe that Johnny Cash had covered it and how incredible the cover was.
Best cover ever. Another iconic cover is “Sounds of Silence” by Disturbed.
I read Johnny was in real pain during this time. Rick Rubin was pressing him and they all knew it would be his final work. Haunting, and beautiful.
Raw truth has power
“Rusty Cage” by Johnny Cash (original by Soundgarden)

I dislike soundgarden, but I can listen to this version.
