Inmates in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) began receiving tablets this week as part of a plan to supply all state prisoners with secure tablet computers.
More than 21,000 inmates at over 20 facilities will receive tablets that will give them access to books, college classes, music and even a way to communicate with their families.
"The tablets represent a critical update to the communications and technology services we offer inmates here at the department of corrections," ODOC spokesman Justin Wolf told CNN. "This sort of technology shows how we interact with our inmates and allow them access to education, employment opportunities, and so much more."
The goal, according to ODOC, is to reduce the chance that an inmate will be incarcerated again following their release. The program is a partnership between ODOC and Securus Technologies, which provides technology services to correctional facilities.
Securus is one of several companies contracted by ODOC to provide inmates phone services, as Oklahoma has a bidding process to ensure the delivery of these services is done objectively. With that agreement, Securus provides other services including tablets to inmates.
The tablets come with a platform of more than half a million free books, access to legal books and documents, self-help resources and even phones that inmates can use to speak to family.

They have computer stations in the library. They don’t need personal tablets.
The only support I give for tablets are for education purposes only. Not that I view tablets as being better than a pen and paper, because I don’t. Nothing beats the pen and paper.
There are some places in the world where you have to pay the state real money for your upkeep in prison.
This is the modern way of having a library I suppose but the opportunity for mischief is greater.
I thought the whole idea of prison was to make it so terrible you would want to never go back. Not so much but still a terrible place to be.
Tony stop by tonight I gotta job for ya.
Hi.
I’m guessing there’s at least one code slinger and one system engineer incarcerated in OK.
Two months and there will be gambling, porn and various other internet crimes that will insue.
Hope I’m wrong.

FTA: and even a way to communicate with their families.
Bugsy to “family” member: I want you to pass a message to Louie to remove any obstacles to my release....
The inmates are running drug gangs outside of prison right now while in prison. Now they can use a tablet that even high schoolers have cracked as they did the iPads given to them here in Los Angeles. It also turns out that Apple was bribing school officials for the big contract. I suspect bribe money to state officials for this and future contracts.
There’s people serving time in prison for selling orchids without a license.
I think a lot of people here would be shocked at the sheer number of “crimes” in America today that could land one behind bars.
