It would seem that the navy would still be there after the guy’s played in the NFL a few years. The average is what, three?

Bad PR on the navy’s part, just to oppose Trump. It’ not like there’s a war on or anything... right now...

It’s the entitlement generation. Actually, he would be a perfect fit for the NFL, with it’s entire population of “me firsters.”

IIRC, Robinson entered the Academy at 6’-6”. He was accepted into the Academy while in HS when his height was still under 6’. By the time he had enrolled he had grown to 6’-7” but he was granted a waiver because they thought he had topped out, which obviously was wrong.

As per the rest of your comments you are correct about turning away top academic / athletic students. Even so most of these athletes enter the pros as unsigned free agents because teams don’t want to waste a draft pick on them because of their commitment to the service. If they get lucky and make the team then they apply for the waiver. A few years ago, the Seahawks had the former Navy QB on the team who was allowed to play and participate with the team but also was required to serve during the offseason.

That should not be the primary consideration for the US Navy. As it is, the service has become far too vulnerable to fears of the press. The Chase Standage case is a perfect example of cowardice by leaders. That said, kinley would be a perfect fit for the self-absorbed prima donnas called the NFL.

NBA player David Robinson, for example, was deemed too tall to serve (shocking they missed this all through his academy time)

He grew nearly 11 inches WHILE at Annapolis - literally grew out of being able to serve.

Except they tend to delay service when a player gets picked by a pro-team.

Yeah but not for a guy in his late 20s that hasn’t played football in years.

then he shouldn’t have signed the contract...

even if he paid the money back, he denied another of the chance he wasted, and that is forever.

how does that get paid back?

But they have, recently even, granted delayed service to others. Nothing wasted, the service was only delayed until the end of their careers.

then what good are they to the service, since to use your analogy they will have been out of the loop for longer than the contract they signed?

and how long will the RETRAINING take before they are useful??

and if incapable or unwilling to fill their contract???

no.

The average NFL career is 3 years. Also there’s the good publicity. But MOST importantly is that they have recently granted this delay to multiple players in recent year. Why say no to him?

they should have said NO to the others too.

pls address the potential cadet that had their life shortchanged by this type of selfishness...

ever heard of Roger Staubach?

During his junior year at the Naval Academy, Staubach’s color-blindness was detected and he was commissioned directly into the Supply Corps, which did not necessitate being able to tell the difference between red (port) and green (starboard) lights or to discern the color differences in electrical circuitry.[14]
Staubach tosses a pass against Maryland.

After graduating from the Naval Academy in June 1965,[15] Staubach could have requested an assignment in the United States, but he chose to volunteer for a one-year tour of duty in South Vietnam. He served as a Supply Corps officer for the Navy at the Chu Lai Base Area until 1967. Staubach supervised 41 enlisted men.[16]

thus endith the lesson

Doesn’t matter if no one was short changed. It’s a simple matter of look at this point. They’ve granted this delay of service to multiple white players in recent years, and now they’ve denied a black guy. That just plain looks bad.

Staubuch was 56 years ago. Different world.

The only lesson we’ve got here is that you’re pointlessly rude.

Your answer is 100% about your opinion which studiously ignores the facts on the ground. They DO give these delays. They have denied him. The optics of who has gotten the delay who hasn’t are bad. Those are the actual facts. None of which you’ve even been willing to acknowledge.

I really do not know who the players were who had service delays granted. Could you please specify and give the reasons? Did they have a treatable illness?..wife who died and there were children of the couple who needed care? Please enlighten.
