Mother, daughter donate 80,000 'child support' pennies dumped outside home

One Richmond family got a shocking delivery last month when 80,000 pennies were dumped on their front lawn. Now, they're using the money to help those in need.

"I just turned 18. When I was in the middle of class, my dad came by. He had rented a trailer," Avery Sanford, a Deep Run High School senior, said. "He pulled up in front of the house and turned the trailer on so it dumped out all the pennies on the grass and my mom came out and was like, 'What are you dumping in my yard?' She didn't know who it was until he shouted, 'It's your final child support payment."

The act had an impact on the teenager.

"It's not just my mom he's trying to embarrass, it's also me and my sister and it's upsetting that he didn't consider that before he did that," Sanford said.

Once the pennies were picked up, Sanford and her mom decided to turn a bad situation into a positive one.

Every penny of Avery's last child support payment will be donated to Safe Harbor, a domestic abuse center.

"Turning around and donating that money to moms and children in need, I feel like that really turns this situation into a positive. You can learn from it," Avery said.

Sorry, I’ve been through divorce and know exactly how screwed over as a guy the system is...

This however was the act of a selfish a$$hole, I don’t care how he may have been “provoked”...

Clearly this kid and their mother are better off without him in their lives...

And I say that as someone who advocates heavily for fathers...

I have no doubt when I pay my last child support payment I will celebrate, but I won’t try to humiliate or embarrass my ex.. let alone do it in front of my child.

This guys a loser and a prick, and hopefully he doesn’t have any other offspring.

I don’t disagree with any of that, no need to be sorry I was more wondering aloud what drove him to it.

I am not condoning this guy’s behavior.

"You’d probably do better melting them down and pulling the copper out."

Post 1982 a penny is only 2.5% copper the rest is zinc. Before 1982 they were 95% copper 5% zinc.

It was about annoying pennies?   Alright then.

I have a book titled "The Dictionary of 20th Century Allusions" and in that aspect I recognize that I failed the lesson in regards to Seinfeld.   That's one mea culpa I just have to own.

According to present thinking that’s what she gets for having a man father her child. Right?

I raised two children. I know it cost me more than $800 a month, each. I would have paid whatever it took.

When you father a child, it brings a responsibility for the life of that child.

Men seem to forget that when they are taking out the little one eyed monster.

Sure divorce the woman who did not turn out to worship you after all. The children are still yours. They are your responsibility. THEY did nothing wrong.

The men who walk around like they are getting screwed by their kids sicken me. Take a look around—how many of people in jails had an absent father. How many single teen moms have an absent father.

For a man, a true man, to act like this is pathetic and childish.

without knowing the full story, how many people rushed to judgment and condemned the father in these situations?...

There should not be a divorce between parenting time and financial responsibility.

Actually, as I am two and a half weeks from my 47th wedding anniversary, I believe for a man to be divorced is...   To swear before God is not to be taken lightly.

We don’t know the whole story here. I have watched my daughter in law turn the kids from loving their Dad into disrespect and ridicule. Dad was not
Prince Charming but lived a good hard working life. Mom spent dollars on breast enlargements instead of shoes for kids, but he got the blame for no shoes. Again he was not Prince Charming either.. he ended up working and never home much.

The daughters are correct to keep their distance from their vindictive father. You may want to take out your hate and anger on an ex-wife, but what did the kids do? He’s a creep, and if he is this resentful about supporting his children, they aren’t likely to see any further financial help from him, never mind mature emotional support and advice.

It's up to the grownups or adults to act their age. The kids learn from these role models eventually.

I paid child support for years until my ex-wrote me a letter to tell me she had remarried and didn't need the money anymore. That I could stop the payments and use it myself.

Instead, I opened a savings account for our son and deposited the monthly payments into his account. When he turned 18, I turned the account over to him and he had a sizable grubstake to jump start his adult life with.

Of course, he blew some of the money right off, but I told him if he would save a little every month himself, that I would match his deposits myself. I stopped when he turned 30 but he has always appreciated that arrangement. He says it taught him the habit of saving some of his paycheck every month.

As his father, it was the responsible thing to do. I never regretted taking the high road in that breakup. My conscience was at ease knowing I wasn't being vindictive or punitive when it wasn't necessary.

My goodness yes. But that’s not what we’re discussing. We’re referring to child support $. At least I thought that’s what I thought this article was about. If I missed something, please let me know.
