Wouldn’t matter but so much anyway. We’re targeting the S protein, which must retain its ability to bind to the appropriate human cell receptor site, like a key going into a lock. If you change the key too much, it no longer fits the lock. Ergo no cell entry. Ergo, no replication.
There are a limited number of permutations for the S protein which will continue to allow it to bind effectively. Thus far, antibodies for one configuration have been effective enough with the others to not see any significant decline in vaccine efficacy. Should something else come up, the vaccines will be adjusted to compensate. It’s all just nucleotide sequences now. The S protein is the Achilles Heel of this bug. It can’t replicate without it, and we know exactly how to break it.
I think your analysis is spot on. We’ll have pockets of COVID with us for a long, long time but unless a variant pops up that renders the current immunity we’re at ineffective, the days of it being a national health emergency are over.

It is looking like the decline that took off in Mid-April is the effective end of the Public Health problem - the crossing of Herd Immunity Threshold.
Back then we still had significant hotspots, like Michigan. I don’t hear about hotspots now.
Welp, there is no valid test for Covid in use at this time as the PCR does not detect the Covid Virus nor the Covid illness.
So we know people died. We know last year’s data shows 38 million cases of flu ‘disappeared’ so we can assume that some of those ‘deaths’ you report are flu, pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses as well.
But most importantly May 5, the CDC revealed that only 5% of the deaths in that count were people who died of ‘covid-only’. All others, yes that’s 95% of the remaining number had an average of 4 comorbidities. So the numbers of deaths due to Covid continue to be grossly inflated while 100% of all deaths from the vaccine are hotly denied.

As a few of the regular posters have pointed out before (2AProtectsTheRest, MrSmith), the likely effect of variants is that we would need higher rates of immunity (vaccination plus natural exposures) to reach Herd Immunity - roughly 60% for the original strain, up to 80% for some variants of concern.
The vaccines are marginally less effective, and those variants of concern are marginally more infectious.
But with 63.4% of adults already having had at least a first shot, and about 120 Million Americans estimated to have already been exposed naturally (about 36% of the total US population, an unknown percentage of whom are also counted among the vaccinated), we are likely mostly in the ballpark for the existing variants of concern already.
In fact, most of the new cases in the USA today are those variants - about 75% are the UK variant, and about 10% are the Brazilian (P1) variant - yet case numbers continue their sharp decline.
The newer Indian variant has not yet made big inroads here, but it seems to be making a surge in the UK, despite them have about 75% of adults with a first shot (far fewer with a second, because they wait 12 weeks or more between shots). They also mainly have used the AstraZeneca vaccine, so that likely has a different performance profile from Pfizer and Moderna.
Unless that Indian variant is adept at breaking through Pfizer and Moderna; or a new evasive variant emerges soon, we seem to be looking good on the variant front.

So only 5% of your ‘casualties’ died of Covid and most of those would NOT have died if only they were allowed to be treated with available, safe medications in use for decades. But the CDC and their ‘friends’ needed casualties and to deny medications exist so they could meet the criteria for the EAU that would later be given to the fake vaccines.
Agreed. It appears we’re good with the current strains that are known.
Another note of optimism is should a variant come along that is able to defeat current immunity, mRNA technology gives us an important tool to adapt quickly.
