If it ain’t sweet, it ain’t a kolache. As I found during a recent quest to find out more about why we call savory kolaches the wrong thing, the klobasnek, the proper term, is widely believed to have been invented in the heart of the Texas-Czech Belt in West. But Village Bakery owner Wendel Montgomery’s klobasnek—originally created as a simple sausage wrapped in kolache dough—has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Here’s a roundup of some of the more unique klobasniky we found around the state.

You should have traveled further east to La Grange and the other small towns out that way.
Not a kolache.

We did just that on our way back to Tennessee.
We had camped just out of Austin and stopped to get our breakfast before we hit the trail.

Was it West? For such a small town, West sure has a lot of really good kolache/klobasnik bakeries. New Braunfels has some good ones too.
Been there...... done that.
I watched a man hold a slice of light bread containing a chunk of BBQ in one hand and a large jalapeno pepper in the other alternately chomping down on both.
Being from Tennessee, we don’t eat BBQ held in your hand with bread. We also don’t eat fresh jalapenos side by side with the BBQ. Now I know
When people line up to eat at a place without plates or utensils (at least that’s how it used to be), the food must be pretty good...
I remember the first 4 of those. I wish my dad were still around so I could ask him about the others...
Yes, La Grange is a great kolache stop! We live near..
Lucas Bakery, downtown LG, best sausage kolache’s as they use a recipe for meat that is amazing.
Weikels and Hruska’s have excellent kolaches and the special pumpkin/cream cheese in fall from Weikels is fabulous! I prefer Weikel’s kolache dough.
lots of treats along us77 if you know where to look
