Lightfoot’s Plan To Ban Alcohol Sales After 10 PM ‘Dead On Arrival,’ Alderman Says

CHICAGO — The controversial late-night ban of alcohol sales at grocery and liquor stores introduced by Mayor Lori Lightfoot is going nowhere in City Council, an alderman said, and more officials are pushing back on the measure.

Last week, Lightfoot proposed a package of reforms meant to help struggling businesses recover from the pandemic. Amid the proposal was a 10 p.m. curfew of beer, liquor and wine sales at stores with a “packaged goods license,” which would primarily be liquor, convenience and grocery stores.

The change would ban alcohol sales 10 p.m.-7 a.m. daily. It is similar to a temporary curfew that was created during the pandemic to discourage gathering, city officials said.

The proposal was instantly controversial — and it continues to face stiff resistance inside and outside City Council.

Downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) declared the plan dead Saturday.

“For those concerned: There will NOT be a 10 p.m. liquor sales moratorium in Chicago. That is 100% dead on arrival at City Council,” Reilly tweeted. “Either the Mayor pulls it or we kill it. That said, have a happy and safe Memorial Day Weekend.”

I don't see the connection between "helping businesses recover from the pandemic" and limiting alcohol sales.

Apparently neither does the city council.

Smart. Make people drive to the bars to drink instead of buying their liquor in a store and taking it home.

Good for them.

I wonder what Mayor Lightfoot’s point is. Does she think that keeping her people from buying booze past 10:00 p.m. will reduce the number of them shot by one another?

Uh-huh. You wanna see city-wide chimpouts, cut off the sales of Wild Irish Rose, Night Train, and TJ Swann at 10 PM. There’ll be enough municipal arson fires started to fill the 11 PM newscast. Lightweight is a creepy little insect.

If she legalizes Heroin and Meth, the killings will stop in Chicago. No reason to shoot each other over drug turfs every night.

With fewer target’s out walking around...

Back in the 60s and 70s lots of places stop selling beer after 10 they were called blue laws in Virginia and in South Carolina Sundays are not alcohol or alcoholic beverage selling days.

I remember in Virginia when I was a kid you couldn’t buy anything but necessities on Sunday, luckily for me in my ‘62 Chevy Biscayne, motor oil was not on that list.
