You’re correct. Your body only monitors CO2 concentration, not nitrogen or even oxygen.

The effects of HCN on animals is well understood. HCN binds to hemoglobin better than O2, and replaces it. Death occurs by cellular suffocation.

Every breath we take has 3/4 nitrogen. This is why in an atmosphere of 100% nitrogen people don't notice until it's too late.
