Tale of two cities: Homeless shelter to open smack-bang in the middle of NYC’s ‘Billionaires’ Row,’ Court of Appeals rules

Manhattan’s Billionaires’ Row will soon feature a men’s homeless shelter smack-bang in the middle of it despite a three-year offensive to halt its creation by members of the city’s elite, the New York Court of Appeals has ruled.

Residents of the city’s priciest street fought tooth and nail to halt Mayor de Blasio’s $60.8 million plan to open a 150-bed men’s shelter in the closed Park Savoy Hotel at 158 W. 58th St., arguing the location would be a dangerous “firetrap” and that crime would inevitably ensue on the ritzy block.(snip)

(Bebeto Matthews/AP) The Court of Appeals said it was not up to a judge to assess building safety and that “a court cannot second guess (a city agency’s) determination by granting a hearing to find additional facts or consider evidence not before the agency when it made its determination.”

The new shelter is included in the city’s Department of Homeless Services’ Turning the Tide plan, a 2017 initiative that promised to reduce the use of both cluster sites and hotels while building 90 new city-run shelters.

“We appreciate the court affirming the City’s determination to provide New Yorkers experiencing homelessness with shelter at this site and look forward to opening our doors at this location as soon as possible,” said Isaac McGinn, a DHS spokesman.

“We’re confident that . . . our clients will be warmly welcomed as they get back on their feet here and we will make this the best experience it can be for all during these challenging times.”

Let the elites in the city live with the policies they're so desperate to foist on our wonderful, peaceful American suburbs. I hope Robert DeNiro and Sarah Jessica Parker and her ilk welcome all their new neighbors with understanding, compassion, love, and inclusiveness. Share your bounty, have their children over for play dates, enjoy them in your schools, meet at Starbucks, and be proud to live your dream!

Didn’t deBlasio already do this same thing last summer to another upper class New York neighborhood? He seems to derive a deep thrill from making the lives of his constituents near unbearable.

Good. Now there needs to be a homeless shelter opened up on the front lawn of Nancy Pelosi’s house.

Excellent, best news today. Yep until Rat voters face the impact of their politics, nothing will change. Although I doubt he wins, the best candidate for NYC mayoral may be Andrew Yang because he actually believes the sh!t he’s peddling.

Da Commieo needs to erect a tent city for the homeless on the lawn, inside of his new walls at Gracie Mansion.

That’s why it’s only $60 million. Building new would probably be a Billion with a B. It is New York, ya know. Bribes and union contracts.

Too bad Thomas Nast isn’t here to depict a clown like DeBlasio (real name something else) shining the poor unfortunate’s shoes.

$400,000/bed

You can buy a mansion for $400,000 in many cities.

I hope the city can sell the hotel for close to what it paid or more.

Nothing bad that the government does to New Yorkers is bad enough. They voted for it and the deserve to get it - good and hard.

“$60 million dollars?”

You have to take out some for bribes. Also, you wouldn’t expect them to live in squalor but more in line with their neighbors so they don’t feel uncomfortable.
